Cork, marmoleum, bamboo, tell me what you would suggest for 3 bedrooms

Finally the carpets are on their way out and I am wanting a more natural product (to reduce allergens) to put in 3 bedrooms and an office, need 60m yikes!

Spent a long time researching and the above sound like they are very good re being natural products and less vocs, formaldehyde conerns etc

I wondered if any of you had any of the above in a bedroom and if so, would you recommend?

I would worry about issues with seams in the floor with marmoleum and what you will be laying it on top of, if its not a concrete screed will lumps and bumps come through. A flooring professional would be able to advise - check out this Houzz thread [https://www.houzz.com/discussions/marmoleum-underlayment-dsvw-vd~2674634[(https://www.houzz.com/discussions/marmoleum-underlayment-dsvw-vd~2674634) A cork floor will not be hardy enough to withstand an office chair rolling around on it repeatedly either. I would definitely go for the bamboo in the office, though cork might be nice and tactile under the feet for a bedroom.

Thank you very much Amanda, plenty of food for thought and from what you say, I will rule out marmoleum as I have pine floorboards. One more question, the office leads from the living room (which has 1960s original herringbone parquet flooring) It is quite dark as it is aged. I am not going to sand if for some time but when I do it will lighten it considerably. Do you think bamboo will be enough of a contrast and I wonder what to do shade wise, given the living room floor may well be lighter in a couple of years? Should I try and colour match to the shade it will be or do you think I may be over thinking this and should just choose a shade I like?!

HI MARINA, I love your bedroom- great high ceilings. Your furniture is also nice. I would follow the lead from the furniture keeping all furniture white. I love tropical coastal style. I would put up a white ceiling fan and ikea sell some white nets that let in loads of light and give privacy. I would decorate the walls in an off white with a hint of pink in it for warmth and to bring out the tones in your beautiful floor. I would collect local art for the walls. I would go to town on the bedding and cushions for the bed. I would mix your favourite colours- turquoise, teal, with green and coral. Making the room have a tropical coastal beach hotel vibe. I would feel like I was on holiday every day and never want to leave. Once you've surrounded yourself with personal things like photo frames of loved ones, plants/ flowers etc, you will feel right at home and settled. I've loved decorating for years, and tried lots of colours on walls but recently I've returned to off whites as they are so flexible and you can change the look with coloured accessories regular. "2 good books to read are Greg Natale - 'A tailored interior'- He's great, and tells you trade secrets to give your home the wow factor an be your own interior designer. Also anything by Barclay Butera - he's the best for coastal/beach styles. Wishing you lots of fun.

It looks great, I'm glad you and your daughter are so pleased and she has lots of room for friends over, playing etc. It can also be easily and cheaply adapted as she grows if she wants. My only criticism (if you can call it that) is that if not already your daughter may soon also want the desk to double up as a dressing table and therefore I think a mirror was a good idea but the memo board (which looks great) can always be moved as and when needed. (I thought i'd posted a comment on that previously but obviously not!). I might also add a desk light there for working during winter months. So which room next?!

Hi Nicky, my apologies I have only just seen your message. We went for cornforth white Farrow and Ball (which it definitely not white). The shutters are not back open yet but some of them will need to go back on because the large expanses of grey look very grey. The bits next to the white look less austere. The new white garage door with windows has made a big difference. I'd be careful with a very pale grey because if your windows are anything like mine you'll find that they are not actually that white after all....

Thank you guys you ve provided reassurance and consideration for me to keep the windows as they are... maybe I’m being over critical however if they look fine to others then I’m most definitely swayed to keep them. Do you think I just keep fan light sections with the criss cross design or just change those panes for a cleaner look? They are upvc Also, yes I think shutters will go the fan light line in the window to keep it look as sinple as possible. I recognise that half length window shutters would look odd The reason for shutters is that the first floor front bedrooms look out onto a main road with lots of traffic so I felt that would offer privacy. Additionally I have a very severe dust allergy so whereas curtains may look fab, opening and closing them each night and morning sets my allergy off so I find blinds and shutters have always worked best for me? Unless anyway has similar experience or could suggest alternative as I’m open to other options :)

Do you know what wood the parquet is made from? If I was you I would move my sofa and sand back a bit of the floor that will be covered by furniture. Then I would be able to see the kind of colour I'm trying to work with. I would say if both floors are going to be a mid to light colour it would be best to get as close a match as possible colour wise. I have two slightly different oak floors at home and it does look a little weird where they join (but then they are different plank sizes too). It just depends how particular you are. Did you know you can get bamboo parquet?

If you are not too precious about the old parquet floor I would suggest that after sanding back you stain it in a colour to match with your new bamboo floor, then even if the two floors are a different design the difference won't be glaringly obvious.
