Dreaming of Danish "hygge": What do you do on cold winter days?

When the days are getting darker and Christmas is just around the corner, we Danes are all about "hygge". Candle light, being together with friends and family, sitting in front of the fire place with a hot "gløgg": all that is "hygge".

But what are you doing on cold winter days and how does "hygge" look at your home?

Being Danish myself, this has been an experience and feeling that
I have grown up with and I try to create a Hygge experience in everything that
I do. I always start December with an open house invitation to start of the festive season with family,
friends and neighbours. Glogg, Aebleskiver and Marzipan making. A homely togetherness through shared moments and experiences,
including eating and playing boardgames.

Being a Dane too, I always feel that hygge is part of every day life. For example.. at the moment we're going through a major kitchen reno and have no water on ground floor of house plus cooking on camp stove. In the midst of all this dust, madness and general craziness (with two small children) we still have lovely tea lights lit every day, enjoy a nice coffee and afternoon snack as a family etc etc. I'm amazed how the works has all of a sudden cottoned on to the word 'hygge'. It's like some new obsession

Weeducks, yes, Malaysia actually. I've worked in much of this region over the 28 years I've been out here. Emmerline, I am sat here at 7pm as I write this - it is 35 centigrade and extremely humid (because it has cooled down a bit since mid afternoon). I wanted some exercise yesterday and had to wait till after 9pm before it dropped below 30 centigrade - and then only just. Midnight still saw 26 and early morning isn't much better. It has become much hotter over my years here. Life in the city now is air conditioning in the house, car, shops and offices. It is like being a termite not going outside other than in a climate controlled environment like a car, taxi, bus or train. Mornings used to be cool, but no longer. It is always T-shirt and shorts weather here, only because you can't go to less than that! Gardening here is a chore. (I cut the grass yesterday morning) Go into the garden between 10am and 5pm and get burned by the sun. Before or after that time and get eaten by mosquitoes. I tend to look at the garden from inside the house.

What do you think of open plan bathrooms?

I'm looking to renovate the ensuite of my 2 bed flat and came across photos of open plan bathrooms. Some of the photos look great and I'm considering it as I don't have much room to work with in the bathroom and my bedroom has room I can use. I'm looking at moving the basin into the bedroom area, which would free up space for a bath and shower. I was thinking of making the basin look less bathroom-y and more like a makeup desk using wood and soft furnishing and a full length mirror. The rest of the bathroom would be behind a wall (no door). Main problem is that the door to the bedroom will open to the the basin (the rest of the bedroom is on the left), which I guess would put people off. I quite like the idea but I'm concerned it would put off potential buyers (more so after reading the comments). Should I stick with a traditional ensuite? I can put a bath and shower in there but I think it would be too cramped or I can loose the bath and have more room with just a shower. What do you think?

What would you do with the oak panels in my dark hall?

We have the same type of panelling in our hall and it was oak the same as yours with an oak floor. It just started to feel quite dark and drab but we hesitated to to do anything for fear of messing it up. In the end we painted all the panelling in Farrows French grey, left the doors and floors wood and painted the sides of our staircase and the spindles in Farrows clunch but left the newel posts and the bannister rail as wood - looks like a different hallway - I have never regretted painting it

Hi rinq. Thanks so much for all the thought you've put into this, it's so helpful. You're right re bedroom...it pretty much isn't needed now (Mum still pretty young and fit), but she does want to future proof it such that one day she can be on ground floor permanently. Re joists, she is starting to get builders in just to talk through the job. But will likely need an architect too I guess re joists and plans? I think the reason we were automatically thinking ground floor extension originally is that we want that expansive kitchen, dining, family room, but also a separate formal sitting room...not sure we have the sitting room capacity even with the reconfiguring that you've shown? I do like the idea of bathroom and laundry at the front where views aren't needed.

Being married to a Swede, 'higgle' is the only way to survive the long dark winters. Cozy candle lighting, creating intimate zones within living rooms and kitchens are essential to sculpt out warmth in the winter and have to be completed with a glass of Glögg and home made ginger bread shared with friends!
