Are those vibrant yellow flowers coming from the grass beneath it? What plant is that?

The Yellow flowers come from the Anigozanthus Bush Yellow

There’s not many people who say they want to keep dandelions in their lawn:) Question is do you intend to mow the lawn? Or partially mow it but keep some areas as grass and wild flower? Agree the cuckoo flower is pretty tho. You can get wild meadow seed mixtures which from what I’ve read you have thin out some of the grass to give the more tender flowers a chance of growing. Clover would be a great addition. Another possibility for more colour is around the edges with weeds! Technically a weed is something you don’t want growing in your garden but I do love surprises sometimes. In mine I have purple toadflax, vebascum thapsus, feverfew, foxgloves, and lots of aquiligas (not a weed as such but it seeds everywhere, even grows in the walls). Also if you want some scent, sweet rocket (again will seed anywhere) and if you have a sunny position phlox is great reliable perennial flower. If you have dappled shade under a tree then bluebells and wild garlic make a lovely combo. Hope this gives you some inspiration:)

Looks like an Agave, but I can’t be certain! If it is they love hot sun so amazing that it’s doing so well. I have a grass called Miscanthus sinensis Zebrina (or something like that) and I’ve got it growing in a pot. Its in shade most of the day and gets a bit of sun late afternoon, It’s green with a yellow horizontal stripe. It’s about 4’ tall and has grassy tufts in late summer. It goes a pale straw colour in winter rather like ripe wheat which I leave on until spring when I cut it back almost to the ground, then up it pops again. Other plants that cope with shade are ferns and Elephants ears. A larger shade lover is Fatsia japonica, but it’s a biggie. RHS website has lots of advice on shade loving plants. Heres my Miscanthus

I see what you mean about the gap between concrete and fence and the potential for weeds to creep through from neighboring gardens. I’m constantly in battle with next doors ivy:(. So yes I think raising the borders would be a good idea but as Sonia has pointed out that trees and shrubs will be far better planted in the ground rather than in a planter. I think a raised bed would be an ideal solution. The only issue is that any soil which is next wood will cause it to rot and create more problems for the fence, easily solved by lining the wood with some heavy duty plastic sheet. Just cut a section so it covers the wood and able to let water drain in the ground, then at the front edge of the border (next to the grass) you could use whatever decorative edging you like. Once it’s filled in with soil/compost this will cover the concrete and give a nice uniform look. If you want to use weed proof membrane and pebbles then that’s fine but cut a hole for any trees/shrubs so the roots can use the ground soil. Also, if you use bark chips as a top layer this makes it much easier to pull out any airborne weeds such as dandelions. I like Sonia’s idea for an obelisk and a climber. The winter flowering jasmine might be nice and give you some winter colour ( p.s. I’m no good at remembering the Latin names:)). Alternatively I thought some flowering spikes might look interesting with the natural looking mix, so something like perennial foxgloves, verbascum, acanthus (think there’s an evergreen variety of this), penstemon etc. For spring flowering you also look at Aquilegia, some of the vulgaris varieties can grow quite tall (up to 1m). They do have a tendency to self seed everywhere tho but easily controlled and very pretty when in flower. I think an evergreen of some sort would look good and anchor the rest of the planting, something that’s easily controlled such as osmanthus holly olive, yew, or the upright euonymus, all slow growing and won’t be fussed about being clipped.
