Help me with my boring shower room!

Evening Houzzers,

my downstairs shower room is on real need of some colour or accessories to liven it up. As you'll see on the pics its all grey and white at the moment and is very boring and bland. I want to liven it up but keen not to make it cluttered. obviosuly don't want to change the fittings or floor and tiles but happy to consider other options!

For a splash of colour and fairly cheap too I’d swap the towels and have a bright orange or turquoise instead. I presume there’s no window for a blind with some colour?

Daisy’s idea of using towels as a burst of colour is good. A bright fuchsia pink would also work well.

I agree with Red80 re furniture layout. There are lots of good things in this room, I just personally find the cushions and blinds clash with the chandelier and wallpaper. I would swap the 2 geometric cushions for softer patterns in lighter grey/white/duck egg. I'd get something with different textures as the cushions fabrics look the same atm? Add accessories to your coffee table, maybe just a pile of books, a vase of flowers, and an "ornament" in wood/ceramic/pewter etc again for texture. When budget allows swap the blinds for Roman blinds. Try blinds 2 go or Tuiss which is their sister company if you're in the UK. I can't remember the exact price but I got pure silk Roman blinds for 2 really large windows for c£450 which sounds a bargain to me although not yet up:) I agree the mirror is a little high. If you can, without leaving a hole on show in the wallpaper, I'd lower it as long as it doesn't reflect the tv! I'm not sure the pics to the left of the window work as they're obscured by the curtains. Perhaps also a taller vase/pot in the blue for the tv cabinet to detract from the tv a little more? Alternatively you could change the wallpaper and the mirror to give the room a contemporary rather than classical feel

Wait until you've got the rug. It might be a bit too much fluffiness, and I'm a woman ;-) I think I would personally go for something a bit more understated. And do you have enough space for it? the rooms have a lovely basis and can very easily be transformed as the floor looks very contemporary I would continue down that route... the pic Jonathan added and the pictures I added would suit the room perfectly you need to put in some paneling which a contemporary art canvas/picture in one of the squares and have some velvet sofas to continue on with the same style. I personally don't think the circular rug would look that great but choice is yours :) please send pics of the finished thing when it's done

I agree with Daisy's idea for a quick fix, but I think you could make this more WOW by getting rid of the stark white colour and toning it with a mid grey paint. This would create a lot of atmosphere to the space and give it that expensive spa like feel. Choose a grey that works with the tiles then watch that gorgeous wheel and the whiteware pop against it creating a strong visually pleasing effect.

thanks all! Yep i agree that I need to change the towels for something more colourful. No, it has no window unfortunately Daisy.

Monica - yes I like the idea of the grey walls but worried that it woukd make the room too dark and gloomy?? esp as it has no natural light.

I was thinking of maybe swapping that wheel for a nice picture to add some colour, if that is the right place for a picture? and had also thought about putting something just inside the door (as in on the floor) but couldn't decide what?

Raz, I get that you would feel scared of the overall dark feel but I am telling you, be brave and try it, you could end up loving that room more.

White in a room without natural light can look depressing and lifeless, a darker colour actually recedes and creates the illusion the space is larger as well as adding soul and atmosphere. You do not have to go as dark as those tiles, and you could even go a lighter grey that tones nicely instead of fighting against. Be brave, its only paint and a bit of effort, you can always changed it back. :)

Buy some colourful towels and floor mats. Colourful blinds if you have a window. Put more pictures on the wall and an interesting mirror over the sink. You could also paint or wallpaper the walls.

The door looks cream as the paint has yellowed. The room is a litte stark, therefore painting it, even in a slightly warm grey, will not darken it. You have plenty of white light in there. Add in a contrast colour to brighten.

How about going dark on the wall where the sink is and leave the towel rail wall white or pale grey? I do think the dark colour all over could look good, but in a windowless room, I’m not so sure. To be honest it would be my idea of hell! You could then add a round wooden or brass mirror, faux plants (nothing will survive in a room lacking natural light) and as suggested colourful towels - I love turquoise or pink best. At least this way, if you hate the grey wall you can then repaint it!

Thanks all! yes i am coming round to the idea of grey walls, think the stark white walls may be the main problem with the room! Thanks for the mock up MATH, really helps to visualise it. and I like the green, had been thinking of green too and that would link with the faux plant idea. Coukd also get picture of canvas with the green colour in.

Unfortunately dont want to change the mirror atm, it's wired in and gives good lighting.

for painting the walls, what shade should I try? a really light grey so it's not obvious or something darker but still not as dark as the wall tiles? Monica, I presume u mean wall tiles or do u mean the floor tiles? and should I paint all the walls or jusy the sink wall? only thing is the towel rail wall is such a big expanse of blank white!! how is best to sort that? maybe a shelf with the said plants on??

Grey is nice.................however, I might vote for 'F&B Brassica' it's the colour of a muted grey / purple Heather.............teamed up with your vivid green canvas and plant would really lift it.

I think it still looks modern and fresh just could do with a little update - doesn't have to cost the world!

I'd pop in to a local showroom!

Shower you could have as a riser with an overhead and try and match the holes up if they are 150mm pipe centres.

That style basin is very 1990-2005 so would be good to update it. It looks somewhere around the 800-900mm mark? Find a mdoern basin in a showroom, explain the problem and they'll be able to get a basin to cover the gap. Make the unit a different colour, could go blue, could go woodeffect, either would make the room feel much warmer and inviting. All the space to the left of the door needs is a piece of art or furniture to match the basin, open shelves maybe? Something like the photo attached below :) Hope this helps!

A wooden (look) vanity, in a color as the steering wheel. And a seablue ceiling. Turquoise/teal towels. Door painted crips white like the rest of the whites in there.

A splash of blue/red would look lovely, i'm not sure if the wheel was on purpose but you could go for a nautical theme, with boats, anchor etc would look great in there. A pale grey wall, navy, white and red accessories would make the room stand out a bit more.
