How would you furnish this awkward living room/dining room/kitchen
I’m looking at some ideas on how I can furnish my new flat, it’s a really awkward space and not in love with how its furnished by the current owners. Thanks!

I probably wouldn’t have a bookcase, would you suggest anything else to furnish the area? Or would it look over crowded?

Comments (10)I understand your issues with the outlets for the chandelier and the tv. I suggest that when you look at furniture for the room you consider its scale. Do NOT buy furniture that is oversized or too large for the space. Look at apartment scaled furniture so that I doesn't overwhelm the room. A scaled down couch, a comfortable chair, an ottoman that can serve as a coffee table or extra seating. Neutrals. You can always add color with an area rug that will look nice on your floors and pillows, art, etc. things that you can change out as your taste changes. I am curious if you have any electrical outlets in the center of your floor? It might be possible to float your couch with its back facing the north wall and the dining area, and facing out towards the windows and view. And then you could put your tv between the windows on a media stand and not on the north wall. In any event, one of those arc lights might be nice for this space, too. Comments (6)If you're adding bar stools would it not be tempting to have the tv where they do so you can view from both rooms?! Rather than the fire, have the tv over a narrow console which is a bit more typical for a Hallway. You could paint the wall a shade of grey (keep others light) to disguise the tv and add accessories. A projector could potentially be an option on that wall (??). Or slightly more unusual options...I can't see what the breakfast bar is like but maybe something bespoke built against the dishwasher or even wrapping round the pillar! Or go with your option with a small sofa, you could then add a console behind to create a hallway to the bedroom but it leaves it quite tight for a coffee table and tv unit (plus back of tv exposed if you use the balconŷ). Comments (2)I have Windows floor to ceiling both ends of my lounge and only one complete empty wall the opposite wall ,has large double doors with small walls each side. I find small pieces of furniture more suited to keep the feeling of light and space. Comments (4)One option enclosed. I think the photos in the post show furniture that is visually too big for this room. You could mark out furniture on the floor to get an idea of possible furniture positions and how big you can buy. Personally I think you will conclude you have room for one sofa no longer than 1.9m plus two chairs about 80x90cm each. If you choose lower and smaller arms than shown in the picture I think that will also help....See MoreAmy Rhead

4 years agoThey're nice! IKEA have some great ones - this armchair is great because it's super comfy but doesn't actually take up too much room. I've also found a nice sofa too!
I'd keep the sofa etc where it is now so you'll have the space in the middle of the room to open it up more. I'd definitely get rid of that bookshelf but have floating shelves in the area where the table is - or even above the TV if you need.
