Kitchen doors problem

I had a new kitchen fitted around 6 years ago and a couple of years ago I noticed the laminate on the doors was coming away from the wood/board, it started on the top cupboards and the bottom cupboards were ok at the time. I contacted my local joiner who said it must have been a manufacturing fault, he contacted the chap who did the kitchen and he passed on the manufacturers details. My joiner managed to get new doors for me and fitted them, I paid him for this. Since then the bottom doors have now gone the same way, I tried to contact the manufacturer but was told they had gone out of business. I have asked another kitchen place for advice but they said they couldn't get doors to fit my cupboards and didn't offer further help. The doors have now been like this for around 11 months and look awful. After seeing a recent poll here on Houzz about shaker and modern kitchens it has spurred me on to get advice. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi there, sorry to hear your kitchen woes - laminate wrap doors can be prone to the sort of degradation you outline, though it sounds as though the original quality wasn't up to the job - that might be why the company is no more!

Looking at your dimensions, these are all perfectly standard sizes, so I don't really understand the comments from the kitchen company you spoke to. If I can speak frankly, I suspect they just don't want to do door changes (many small independents don't as margins are thin and they eat up a lot of design & fitting time for very little profit). MY suggestion is to find a couple of kitchen door change specialist companies in your area and get a couple of quotes. Door change companies are geared up for just the sort of renovation you need.

We only do a couple of door changes a year (and, tbh, I wouldn't miss them!), and the door manufacturer we use is East Coast Fittings. I don't believe they deal direct with the public, but if you call them on 01664 424288, they'll no doubt put you in touch with a local stockist. They can make bespoke to any unusual size, though as I said, your door look perfectly standard!

And Google is your friend - try "kitchen door replacement" as the search term and see how you get on!

Thanks very much for that advice, I did suspect the job wasn't big enough, even my joiner didn't seem to want the job in the end! I'm pleased (+ surprised) to hear the sizes are pretty standard so I will now search for kitchen door companies locally and try and get it sorted at long last. Thanks again!

When it was fitted was the bottom suitably sealed / treated? Particularly if it was adjusted to fit. Do you have a weather bar fitted on the outside? You should be able to seal the dog flap with a suitable silicone sealant.

Thanks all. The colour roundthe corner is a good idea. Wine rack is a no no . !possibly some base shelving or vertical rack ..with alight colour and dark colour combo may tie it all up but a bit contrived .or justa light colour door. .And then I would maybe have dark short wall cupboards instead of shelves to span between wall and tall units..thinking the grey stoneworktop will bring it all together ..

Sorry Mat not sure if I follow. Are you having storage put in by the door? There is no storage labelled on your plans. If so, then visually speaking, the room starts from where the floor starts not from where the wall behind the cabinets starts. So if you have the same distance from both sides i.e. from right wall and from the left cabinet, it will still look symmetrical. Do you see how the room starts from the door of the cabinet and not from the splash back behind the sink? Here the column between the doors looks the same size as the wall next to the cabinets, whereas in reality the wall is at least 60cm wider. Again here the door appears to be in the centre of the room but in reality the wall on the left hand side is much wider because it carries on behind the cabinets. The designer has cleverly placed a T.V. there to stop the eye from noticing the rest of the wall. The same effect can be achieved with floor to ceiling cabinets. Was that what you were asking about or have I gone way off?

As said the doors are standard sizes and a lot of suppliers can obtain made to measure sizes anyway so I can't see any problem.

Unfortunately sometimes the laminate does peel off. It's normally due to heat from ovens, hobs, sunshine through the window or a bad manufacture.

Perhaps this will offer you an opportunity to have a different design and colour of door.

Many thanks. Any particular doors you would suggest. My kitchen does get steamed up, the extractor fan isn't great.

I have Matt dove grey handleless and love them but everyone is different. I don't have an extractor at all. Found I never used mine in my old kitchen. Fortunately I don't get a lot of condensation.

Hi there, this can be a common problem with laminate doors! Replacement doors shouldn't be too difficult to obtain these days, as many companies offer this as a service.
Whether your doors are standard sizes or made to measure, there is an excellent door manufacturer that makes doors just like yours (I think they are from the range Cambridge) by BA Components www.byba.co.uk
There is a 'find a dealer' section, where you can find a tradesman in your area and obtain a quote. Generally quotes are no obligation!
IF, there is any sort of issue colour matching- consider going slightly darker on the bottom like Dakar, Mussel or Cashmere.
You can see an example of doors from
the above company that we fitted on a de-laminated kitchen. The clients cupboards were all different sizes, however because the doors are made to measure- this wasn't an issue. Best of luck!

Thanks for the advice. So, shall I stay away from laminate doors and what are the alternatives? I will definitely be contacting some door companies and getting a quote, thanks to all the expert advice on Houzz I am now on the right track to sorting this out! Thanks!

The issue is that your wall cabinets are too close to the hob so heat and steam is peeling them.
I would replace your wall cabinets with slightly smaller cabinets so that there is a gap each side of the extractor.
You might also try to get a better extractor or at least replace filters so it is working as best it can.

I have used doors2size.co.uk for some shaker doors, plinth, filler strips etc for a custom vanity unit. They seem to have an endless option of styles and colours and everything is made to order so any size you need should be available. I agree about the wall cabinets too close to the hob. Our kitchen designer advised a 90cm extractor over a 60cm hob for this very reason.

Thanks for the advice and name of who you used. I will be looking into all these options. I have a feeling it's going to be quite an expense, I paid around 6000 originally, didn't think I'd be having to replace things 6 years later. Really helpful advice from everyone, I will certainly be giving an update with photos once all sorted.

Base each door on around £40 as an average. Drawer fascias £20. That'll give you some idea. You don't look as though you have wall end panels on the sides near the extractor so that's less to buy.

If you're looking for a shaker, from what I can see on the photo, doors, plinths and handles shouldn't be much over £600. Then fitting. Can you fit yourselves? They're normally clip off and clip on. Do remember to ensure that the hinge hole positions are in the same place.

That's helpful, thanks. I'd probably have to get someone to put them on. I'll be interested to see what door choice I've got which aren't laminated as I wouldn't want the same thing to happen.

Look at acrylic doors. They don't have the 'wrap' problem.

The search is on! I've emailed details to a local kitchen company who I found after searching on byba.co.uk (advised by Adornas Kitchens) and they say the doors will have to be made to measure and advise acrylic so far. I've looked at acrylic styles on Houzz and I've seen a few I like but not many. Will this style suit the tiles I have? I'm not sure. Some are very 80's so I will have to use my imagination to create my own style. I will now wait to see what the cost is and take it from there. I'm taking everyone's advice including the extractor fan problem. Thanks again and I'll update soon.

I think you will find that the majority of acrylic doors are slab design and gloss. Therefore if this is the case you will have more of a modern kitchen style as opposed to traditional.
