I think curtains mounted on the wall would be pretty and give a softer effect. When you want new windows, do have a look at our 22 members - all have to make their wood windows to our exacting criteria. The frames can be expected to last around 60 years, and they won't need a lick of paint for 8-10 year.

Blinds would be the better option and would help the room feel more spacious. Wooden venetian blinds are good for controlling the light effectively, and would suit that window perfectly. You could also go for roman blinds, or if you're looking to block out as much light as possible, a blackout roller blind.
