Need help with sewing

Hi! I am shortening the arms of a chiffon dress that are too long for me! I have a Brother AE2500 sewing machine. The stitch i am trying to apply is shown on the image below but i am not sure how to set the sewing machine to stitch like that. As i opened the stitches up the sleeves have a elastic band. I tried reading the booklet given but can't seem to find how to do it.

Hi, the stitch you're trying to copy can't be done with your sewing machine. It's done on an over locker, the closest stitch would be a zig zag to finish the raw edge off then create a casing for the elastic to go back into. Just turn a hem up after finishing the edge making sure it's wide enough for the elastic to go through. Leave an opening so you can slip the elastic through with a safety pin attached to help guide it through the casing. Don't forget to keep hold of the other end as it's frustrating to pull the elastic straight through. Lol. Hope this is understandable and sorry if I'm explaining things you already know, wasn't sure how much sewing knowledge you have. Good luck.

Greg think you have made a great start, just needs a few colourful statement pieces. Firstly the chest of drawers are fab, my suggestion if you like them would be to utilise them in the lounge either side of the radiator under the window, for storing what looks like cd's the other side of the fireplace in these. You could put the existing cubes either side of the two sofa's. I would ditch the rug in the lounge, and get something bold and bright such as cobalt blue with orange/yellow. In the bedroom, keep the IKEA drawers and paint them either black or dark blue and have them adjacent to each other on the back wall opposite the bed, with the TV on top as someone has already suggested. The art work is great, but would swap it over to where the mirror is and move that elsewhere. Again ditch the rug, maybe an animal skin would work well in here, keeping a masculine feel. Pick some of the colours from the artwork for a well chosen throw and cushions for the bed, and don't be afraid to use some other accessories such as vases, lamps and dare I say candles!

Oh what a great piece to have in a home. Very well repaired/renovated. Pink/red might not be my choice- but well done. I have a Victorian sewing table in its original condition. Very eye-catching. Kids have no idea why anyone would need such an item in a household.... Short talk on social history just triggers the rolling eye syndrome ... Good news is that I've chosen some curtains - a neutral pleated set, with a black out lining, from John Lewis that go with the wallpaper background without being sparkly...! On the off-chance that someone has experience with fitting curtains on awkward walls, can anyone recommend what sort of curtain rail / tracking to use for this window? I.e. a couple of inches of wall space to the left, and zero to the right of the window... Thanks!

Hello Fiona, It looks like you have a place which could be nice with a little care. In answer to your questions: As many coats as it takes. Paint a coat, look at it when it's dry, if you can still see the paint underneath it needs another coat. Usually 2-3 coats are needed but more for covering really bright colours like that small patch of purple in the living room. I can't suggest a specific brand for another country. A folding screen / room divider would definitely work without causing problems. They are not difficult to make or you can buy one. You absolutely should not surround it on all sides without checking what it is and how much airflow it needs. Probably treated wood for outside furniture. Plastic is cheaper but doesn't look that good and can risk being blown off the terrace in high winds. Metal is more expensive and more likely to get stolen if there's a chance of that. Maybe look out for second hand stuff? Floor lamps would be the obvious choice for light. You can get cheap ones from somewhere like IKEA or again maybe second hand. This is the biggest problem you've listed. Here in the UK the laws for renting say bathrooms and kitchens need extractor fans. Perhaps check if there's a similar law there? If there isn't, you can ask the landlord if you can fit one and if you're lucky bargain for them to pay part of the cost. They are not that expensive. You probably won't convince them to help you. Those look like the remains of roots from ivy or something similar, and might be hard to get off. You could probably rent a pressure washer and do that wall and the terrace at the same time. A couple of notes on paint: - You don't need washable paint for every wall. The hall will need it, and the kitchen and bathroom (or special kitchen/bathroom paints, definitely try to get that for the bathroom) - Yes white is the cheapest colour to buy though Magnolia (yuck!) is as cheap here. White is also the worst colour to paint with as you get 'snow blind' and can't tell what you've already painted. White can also look quite cold. One thing you can do is have a painting/decorating party with your friends. You supply plenty of food and drink and they spend a few hours painting. You can get a lot done in a short time this way and it's quite fun to do. It's a lot less daunting than trying to do it all yourself.
