We moved into our first home just before Christmas and have finally decided to begin working on our living room/dining room! It's a new build property so very plain, and the table and chairs is the contemporary look we want to go for. The sofa, as we've been told in the past, doesn't go with the look we want but unfortunately it's not something we can afford to change at this point..... HOWEVER, we are looking at painting a wall or wallpapering a wall and need some expert advice. Which wall? What colours? Photos below. Thank you in advance!!!

Are you keeping the coving? Do you intend to make he house more 60's or old-fashioned? If you're going for the older look, crystal knobs could look cool but would probably need to go lower on the door ( from what I can tell). If you're after making the house more modern, then I'd lose the coving and ceiling rose and add a modern door handle.

lovely job, without knowing your style or you existing furniture, it's hard to advise. is the rest of the house traditionally styled? if so I'd stick with it, if that's what you're comfortable with

Hi champion cat. I love the period features in the house and want to show respect to the history of the house but I want it to be firmly a modern home. So I would like a mix of traditional and modern. No easy task to get right it seems. I have a modern German kitchen in the basement but the middle floor where the dining room is seems to lend itself better to a traditional style. I need to find a way to make the rooms and floors flow together. I love traditional style but I'm worried the house could end up looking like a posh nursing home if I'm not careful! x

love what you've done with the place! What colour are the walls? To add a modern touch you could add some bright colours in art work or a hot pink rug! Tonight on channel 4 George Clark is doing a series on mixing original features with modern living, it starts tonight and could be a good place to steal ideas

Thank you annarocks123. The colour is Farrow and Ball Cromarty... I think you are right, I need to be brave. There is nothing worse than being boring is there! I saw your post too late to catch the show but it sounds like it is made for me. I should be able to get it on catch up though so I will check it out x

I like minnie's suggestion of something more worn looking like the faded persian. It really is a beautiful room - you've done an amazing job!

This company do lots of nice reasonably priced 'old-look' rugs (they regularly re-stock too so just keep an eye out if they don't show the size you need as available).

Hi Lauren, I can't thank you enough. I absolutely love the Benuta rugs! I think I will be using them for the drawing room too so you have really helped me out. I'm doing a big project with a really small budget and it's hard to find rugs in a large size that aren't cripplingly expensive... so this is perfect!

Have you purchased them yourself? Just wondering if you had any idea of the quality of them as it's always a bit of a risk buying from photos online. I'm not expecting finest silk , just something that will fit in. x

Hi Lotti,

Once I've decorated the master bedroom (slowly working our way through the dilapidated house) I'm planning on buying the rug in the first link I sent you but I've not actually bought from them before. I loved the look of it in this nursery pic I found.

I believe I found the same rug available for more £ from Wayfair.co.uk which had lots of good reviews on it. Will try and find the link for you in a bit if you like.

I agree about how hard it is to find nice rugs at a reasonable price point! If you end up buying one before me then would love to know what you think :).

Finally found the link for the same rug on Wayfair.co.uk, it scores 4.8 out of 5 stars with 10 reviews which are all positive so I'd say its a good bet. You can find almost all the same rugs on there as Benuta but they've been renamed making them harder to track down! Hope this helps and do let me know which one you go for :)

Also if you have enough enclosed storage space elsewhere I'd be really tempted to put a pair of skinny marble/mirror style console tables or bar cart's in the alcoves.

I've ordered lots of bits from West Elm before and had no end of trouble but I came across another company recently called Swoon Editions. They do similar styles at a more affordable price point and I can't say enough good things about their customer service and delivery. Was hands down the best I've ever had for furniture ( I ordered their Douglas media unit). The only catch is that they're online only and deal in very limited runs so if you like something its best not to leave it too long to order. There's a couple of bits on there at the moment I think would work nicely in the alcoves. Have also attached a couple of 'inspiration' pics that you might like to visualise the look.

How about finding a carpet colour you like - strong dark blue may look good with your Regency table - and have it made into a rug?

Lottie, your room is beautiful! I was wondering what treatment you gave the floorboards. It looks like you perhaps waxed them? (I'd like to be able to see the grain when I do mine and so don't want to use black floor paint.)

Hi everyone,

Thank you all for your advice and help. I think you can spend too much time looking at a room and need a fresh pair of eyes. I spent a year using this room as a bedroom, before restoration, as the ceiling was unsafe upstairs so it became hard to even imagine it as a dining room after a while (debanger3, thank you but trust me I was really glad to move my bed out of there!) ...

Lauren, you have fantastic taste! It sounds like you have taken on a similar project to me too. I really love the second link you sent me and I think the gold iron console tables are just perfect. Thank you so much for giving it some thought. I'm going to buy a small rug from Benuta for another room first to test the quality before I spend out on a huge rug. I'll let you know what I think.

Alyper, that's a good idea, I could look at the cost of whipping and binding a piece of carpet. I did buy a persian rug at auction once but it was a really bad experience as it smelt horribly of someone's dog which just wouldn't go despite countless attempts with my vax cleaner, which put me off. Maybe I was just unlucky!

Orbseal Cephaguard, the floorboards are varnished after what felt like an eternity of sanding. I used 2 coats of walnut varnish and 2 topcoats of clear gloss. I tried waxing them but as they are pitch pine, they had a tendency to turn orange which doesn't fit with the palette I am using. I found that walnut limited the orange tones while still allowing the grain to show through. When I achieved the colour I wanted, I switched to clear varnish to protect the coloured underlayer. I wouldn't use varnish for a high traffic area but it works for the dining room. I have used Osmo polyx oil in 'Terra' on the oak flooring on my kitchen floor and stairs to achieve a good match which is supposed to be more hardwearing and easier to repair when damaged. Hope this helps. x

Hi, Thank you for the link, some really interesting ideas there. I love the idea of mirrored alcoves, particularly antiqued mirror... I wonder if it is difficult to make yourself. I may give it a go!... Many thanks x

Thanks mark so much for your kind comment. Lauren, I haven't managed to get round to it yet, but will let you know as soon as I do. Having a nightmare at the moment as found out the gable wall was dangerous so having it rebuilt at the moment, which has preoccupied me somewhat. There is no end wall on the house at the moment. Can you imagine sleeping here!? Thank god the weather is good! x Lottie

I voted for the dining room because it looks so elegant. I particularly like the dark floor. Just about to start a new build so very excited and looking for ideas. Hope to achieve a country cottage look so not exactly on the scale of your beautiful room. All the best. x

What a beautiful room. Well done on restoring it to its former glory! I would stick to a traditional look to match your table. It will be a lot easier to source as I think mixing old and new can be very tricky sometimes. Please do post a picture of the room once furnished!
