Please help me make my hallway entrance appealing

I've just bought a four bed property in need of renovation. The house was built in 1930 and has a good history and charm about it, so I want to do the house justice with a renovation that wows on entrance, so please could you be so kind as to send me some ideas!

Comments (23)Time to revive this! Having had consultations with not one but two architects (Karin & Groveraxle were both right; not very costly and money well spent) who both offered up good suggestions and helped me come up with a plan of work for the house. I have had building contractors tendering for the work and have just this morning settled on the firm I am going to use. Work on the house will begin before the end of the month and is scheduled to take 6 weeks. There will be no structural changes to the outside but a little bit inside which will give me a bigger kitchen and will open up the living space somewhat. Also master bedroom is being reworked to add an en-suite, structural reworking of hallway and cloakroom - it will look so different and yet quite evidently the same house which is what I wanted :) Lots of cosmetic changes to take place externally and internally which is the bit I have been looking forward to. You are all invited back to help me make firm decisions about paint colours, wood varnishes, light fittings, flooring type, worktop choice et al! Comments (6)I'm at the end of renovating a whole house and if you're anything at all like me you are probably skint by now! And like you I'm running low on ideas too. Looking at your room I might be tempted to temporarily finish it off by not spending too much money and have it ready for Christmas telly lounging! Then maybe next year (or later ) when you're up for it finish off however you're inspired. So I'd put Ikea shelves above the TVs and paint all of it dark. Having said that I've got loads of books and they always make rooms look good! I'd also keep the fire for now and put book shelves low down the wall and put plenty of artwork above....See MorePlease help me save my hallway tiles!
Comments (6)Ok, so I've tried to delete this post as I've just picked up the rest of the laminate and think that the flooring will need to be replaced. The floor level isn't the only issue. Previous owners have welded other tiles to the original ones (which is where the black glue is coming from). Also, we are soon to be running a new mains water pipe through the house and the flooring will need to come up in the hall. We are having a new boiler and pipe replaced because it currently takes 15 minutes to run a bath. 9 years agoI agree, beautiful entrance! How about adding a vase and flowers underneath the shelf to the right of the door? A simple touch! What are your thoughts on stair runners? Can't see what you've got at the moment, but that could also make an impact.

9 years agolast modified: 9 years agoHave you decided what kind of look you are going for? My feeling is that if you strip the door and side panels to wood, with the floor, it would give it a rather traditional, all-pine (even if it's oak :)) look. A crisp egg-shell white or even grey/ black on the door would bring a contemporary edge. And yes, get a stained glass panel for the front door, too.
How about leaving the door white and striping the stairs side panels to oak. Or if it's not oak underneath, buy thin oak veneer and glue it to the sides (we've done that in our house love it). That will give the banister+floor+sides a coordinated look.

9 years agoLuciano what do you think of the carpet exposing the edges on the stairs, I'm sure it looks good but leaves more cleaning

9 years agolast modified: 9 years agoWe had that in our last house and I wouldn't say it needs more cleaning - I used to hoover the sides at the same time with the carpet :))
Most people tend to walk on the carpet, so the sides only get dusty, not muddy or dirty. I think only the paint on first step got chipped at some point, but not the rest. My MIL has it in her house - this is how it looks after about 6 years since she's moved in and that's a 'shoes on' house.
If you have to have carpet on the stairs, I think this looks so much better than the 'wall to wall' carpet and it doesn't really add to your housework!

9 years agoFirstly, we love the stain glass windows. Secondly, to add a bit of wow factor we would suggest a smart looking carpet up the stairs as a runner such as the attached. Not the same era but still very complimentary to older properties. And maybe a big but tasteful chandelier to complete the look?

9 years agoHi Revovator, How about this adding this ginger jar that can also be used as a vase, underneath the shelf to the right of the door? It will add a traditional touch to your space and instantly brightens it up.
