Smooth decking for UK?
Our decking has been laid quite badly, and has rotted away that it needs completely gutting and redoing.
We've got a 20 year old house so a fairly traditional modern design and the inside has been completely redone to a high end modern standard.
We're just trying to decide on how to do the garden as we quite like the modern gardens rather than traditional ones, and smooth decking looks very nice.
This poses an issue though, most smooth decking appears to be hardwood, and quite simply something like Balau would cost us around £300 for the deck alone.
I did a bit of reading, and i've heard that you can get the more traditional compressed wood decking in a smooth finish, then simply oil it ad varnish it how you like, and you end with the same modern look of hardwood.
Is there any truth to this, and can anyone advise where to get it from and what stain/varnish to use? I'm struggling to find any, and B&Q is not the place to get it from. Their selection was poor.

I guess as the corrugated sheeting had been above the beams, but below the decking I was assuming we'd need to do the same and couldn't quite figure out how we'd do this from underneath....I'd also been worried about the beams rotting but I guess as long as the wood is treated it should be ok......See MoreAre you ready to rip up your decking?

Softwood requires maintenance, and if you do not have the time to keep it good looking, we recommend you go for composite decking, such as Millboard. We have also seen some amazing transformation with Millboard Composite Decking, as it requires very little maintenance, it has good slip-resistance, it doesn't age, and can be used in damp areas as well - such as pool surrounds. Comments (11)With a decking, it is always best to remember that you get what you pay for so material quality is paramount. The support structure is also extremely important and a composite option should be considered as you will have no issues with rot. If your budget is really tight, then have you considered looking on ebay or the internet for a reclaimed hardwood? It may look tatty and discoloured however you can generally buy this cheaply and then renovate it with a jet wash before re-finishing. You can rent a great jet wash from HSS which will strip any algae, etc., quickly and leave the wood looking renewed. Comments (7)Thanks Jonathan, this layout does provoke thought and makes me wonder how we might be able to do it when all things are considered. The attached pics show the air source heating units which need at least 75cm space all round them, and the pics show the area behind the garage a bit better. These air source are right where your plan shows the exit door; but that door could be placed on the TV/fireplace wall and extend storage.... (it's a right mess at the mo!) Grey garage door at front of the house. Bins and air source heating at the side of the garage (along with a pile of patio stone and rubbish). The proposed front store room (see architect drawings) is to be where the bins are. The large store room is proposed to be beyond the air source heat units. Back of the garage. 8 years agoHave a look at roundwood.com I found them to be the cheapest. I would definitely recommend looking at a hidden nail system such as the camo, looks much better in my opinion on hard wood. This is mine, although waiting for better weather to take down the fence and build a wall and render

8 years agoHello, we do a composite decking, doesn't rot, its anti-slip, no need for treatment and very low maintenance. We are also the only UK suppliers of the Qwickbuild aluminium structure to use instead of timber, again moisture resistance so it won't ro. Maybe worth considering www.eliteoutdoorliving.co.uk

7 years agolast modified: 7 years agoWe have a smooth board profile Gripsure Pro Contemporary which features two non slip strips. The deck board is made from a softwood, Scandinavian Redwood Vths grade and is preservative treated. The boards can be stained or oiled to achieve a darker tone and it won't affect the performance of the non slip strips. I hope this helps.
