Help! Hallway and stairs laid bare, ready for Houzz overhall!
Comments (8)Thank you, all, for the input! Finally, following some electrical surprise that needed sorting, this project is fully underway. The hall, stairs and landing have been completely stripped of their nicotine-addled liner paper, and are starting from bare plaster. This means we'll likely take advantage of the once-in-a-blue-moon super-smooth walls and just paint them white, making a feature out of the stair and landing carpet (hall flooring to come next year when we do the rest of the ground floor). The long-wall is north-east facing, and I'd like to be bold with colour, and am leaning toward blue green for dengue shui reasons! Where can I get a Crucial Trading Audrey-esque stair runner in a cooler colour set? Further, my partner has gotten into the idea of being quirky and purchased a set of WWII paratrooper jump lights to install above the door to the downstairs loo (now knows as "the War Room" or "the jump seat"...). So now my bright green mosaic WC (that we'll eventually extend into a wet room) is begging for metro tiles instead. I still want a pop of colour through the door... I was thinking a pretty strong green (again for feng shui reasons) that goes with the stair carpet, and white hexagon tiles or black something-or-others on the floor. Thoughts...??? It's the coordination between spaces that is throwing me!...See MoreOak stairs & floor - oak overload?
Comments (9)How many doors will be off the hall as it may be a little too much oak but will you use a runner/rug? I'm sure the laminate will look just as good! What sort of slate effect were you looking at? Some of the light or honey toned ones would look good but I think the darker grey could look a little cold. I haven't found natural stone an issue in the past, just make sure whatever cleaning fluid you use doesn't have acid in. Or have a look at limestone effect? I only suggest limestone as the honey should work with the wood and the grey will work will the carpet but you can also get similar slate effect. My search has only yielded these so far! http://www.alistairmackintosh-porcelain.co.uk/sahara-natural-stone-porcelain-tiles.html I also spotted an encaustic style tile in your Ideabook, is it worth looking at these?...See MoreStair case design dilemmas
Comments (19)Whaou your current staircase is lovely! So stylish and different. Very unique. I do realise it is not what you want to hear :) but honestly, maybe consider keeping the railing, rather than going for glass? It give so much more characters to a house vs all modern staircase.... If new and glass it is, then I agree that pin+glass would not work. Maybe stain it/paint to match your doors, so you have an harmonious feel? I think it may look nicer and more coordinated than with the oak cladding. The cladding is unlikely to match exactly your floor too so I would worry that it would clash. If your are not considering keeping your current railing, please do consider selling/donating them (EBay or Freecycle) as they are too lovely to be going to the tip ;)...See Morecarpet transitions
Comments (1)Is there a rule? I’ve never been aware of one. I have tiles in the kitchen, laminate in the living room and hall, stripy carpet up the stairs and landing. Then a plain neutral carpet in the bedrooms (all the same). If I was starting from scratch I would do all one floor downstairs, including the hall. I’m happy with upstairs as it is. Love carpet in the bedrooms....See MoreN J
