The star was picked up from Ardingly Antiques fair, but you can source them from the high street. Search for 'barn star' and you should find something very similar.

I can give you the opinion on clearance reduction as most US codes and testing agencies see it. http://publicecodes.cyberregs.com/icod/irc/2012/icod_irc_2012_24_sec007.htm The short story is that a 1" air gap is required behind the heat shield, and something more substantial than foil. TABLE G2409.2 (308.2) REDUCTION OF CLEARANCES WITH SPECIFIED FORMS OF PROTECTION Should give you a good idea of what "should" be an acceptable means of reducing clearance. Think of it as a double boiler system. If you put a pan directly on the heat, you can burn things very easily. But, if you put one pan inside another with boiling water, then it keeps things from getting too hot.

I had their rival Hive installed in February along with new boiler and radiators. Same concept. Worked fine for 2 months then continually loosing signal, I'm only in a small 2 bed terraced and the hive people say it's because the distance is too great between hub and receiver. Rubbish. And didn't solve it when I moved things closer. They're at a loss and when I google it a lot of hive users have same problem. Fantastic idea but it's not working. As it's summer I'm not too concerned but I'm going to have to start investigating and at my cost to switching to a traditional thermostat or to something like nest. I'm very wary though as it was a pain when I couldn't control it and it was suddenly reading temp 32 in my house when I was out at work!

You'll probably not like this answer, but for proper cost control on a project you really need a Quantity Surveyor (QS). I appreciate this is an additional professional fee you'd probably rather avoid but the QS really is your accountant on your construction project and is central to agreeing payments, as well as the inevitable extras (or omissions) , extensions of time, etc. The fact that you've asked this question on here also suggests that you maybe haven't retained your Principal Designer through the construction phase (which has additional implications under CDM regulations which you'll need to be sure your Principal Contractor can formally deal with on your behalf). All of that asides, you've hopefully agreed to use a standard construction contract (eg JCT have a range to suit many construction costs, complexities, etc) and these usually have standard payment terms. Your builder's proposed terms seem very onerous to me but similarly, if there's no formal contract perhaps the contractor is simply protecting himself by seeking payment in advance. Procurement is, unfortunately, a rather dry subject for clients but it is so entirely central to successful project completion that you might wish to take a step back and discuss this with your designer. Hopefully this is of some help to you - it would be great to know how you decide to progress. Best of luck with your build.

my sparky husband says most of these are at their ‘recommended heights’, but no need for them to be all over the place like this, and even the heights are just recommended, not essential. His suggestion would be keep the heights approx as is but have all the en-suite related lined up vertically, and the bedroom ones lined up vertically. (maybe en-suite ones could all be right hand side of door so they’re away from the bedroom ones) definitely your best bet is to get a couple sparks in to quote and give their opinions so you have varying suggestions to choose from.
