POLL: Tell us your Christmas style!
Comments (68)Being Danish, but having lived in the UK for many many years, and now living and running a small B&B in beautiful Provence, France - we have always celebrated the 24th December Danish style and the 25th English style, so getting the best of both worlds! On The 1st of December our house will be ready and decorated in many delicate, often handmade, bought or made by me, decorations. Flickering candles everywhere. On the first Sunday in December, ie the 2nd Sunday in advent, in the afternoon...until often late, our house would be full of friends and family, young and old, for our traditional Danish Gløgg Party, where everybody brings a little red Wine (for har gløgg) and a little something yo eat. We would make lots if gløgg and lots og æbleskiver, the twi bring served in private or in public places all over Denmark from the 1st of December! The tree itself will always be a real one, you will never ever find an artificial in any colour in our house! We get the fresh tree inside normally on the 22nd December, and it is decorated firstly by putting the brass George Jensen star on the top (always a star never an Angel), then the strings of warm white electric lights are spread around the tree. Then the serious decorating of the tree takes place, often accompanied by us eating some of the Danish Christmas nibbles I have made and drinking some Gløgg. The tree dekorations are all in gold, white, red and green. It takes quite some time to decorate, and finsly we hang the candle holders safely and not below any decorations, as c60 live candles are lit on Christmas Eve after our traditional Danish Christmas dinner and as we sit down around the beautiful tree and just before we open most of our presents. We open the rest of our presents just a few, sometime in the morning on the 25th either before or after a very nice brunch! The live candles are all safe as the tree is fresh, and because of the design of the Danish candle tree holders, and it us soooo beautiful, and we would absolutely have it any other way! On the 6th January sadly like all good things, the decorations cone down...and Christmas is another c 11 months away, and we'll do it all over again! Hope you all have a blessed, nice and quiet Christmas, and how lucky those if us are, who can say just that, and for us this will be our first proper Christmas in la belle Provence, and our Gløgg Party has moved to just before Christmas for varietes reasons! ;)...See MoreTell us one thing you love about your home!
Comments (17)Our house is very cosy. I love coming inside after shutting the hens away at night, locking the doors and feeling warm and cocooned tucked away from the outside world. When I go outside in the evening I often hear owls hooting to each other which is just magical....See MoreHow many mirrors do you have in your house?
Comments (27)sianember - Love the mirrors! They bring back happy memories. I have a business 'upcycling' furniture - although I've been doing it for over 20 years now and recycling was hardly a thing, let alone upcycling, in those days :D - but I started out selling mirrors on Greenwich market. A friend and I would find old mirrors in junk shops (this was in the halcyon days when every high street had at least one, sadly they are few and far between now) and we would 'pimp' them and sell them. We were particularly fond of using shells as they were free, meant we got to spend a day at the seaside and we could use the children to collect them!...See MoreTell us: Does your child have their own computer?
Comments (6)Hi. My son has his own desktop and printer now, from the beginning of Year 7. He is 12 and a half. We bought these because we had decided that he should now have his own study area, which is in his playroom/media room, but we now call it his study. He used to do his homework on the computer near the kitchen downstairs. He is using our old home office desk. His Tv and Xbox are also in the study and it is also where he socialises with friends for a sleepover. It has a sofa bed in it. We have emphasised how lucky he is to have this and that computer is for school work mainly. We have rules to the effect that once he starts homework on a weekday evening he cannot fool around on the internet. Until it is all finished. This works well for us. I should say, only for reassurance purposes, not boasting, that he is a top student at a very selective private school, never hands homework in late and was described by his form teacher at parents evening as "an academic high flyer". He also is on grade 6 piano, 3 trombone and loves playing football more than being on the internet or Xbox. So, it can work. It depends on you and I guess the child. I would add that obviously we are a wealthy household, so not everyone can afford to do what we've done. Also, I would say that he has a problem of entitlement, a little. He is a very nice child but doesn't really get how lucky he is. We are not sure how to counteract this but recently I read that children do benefit from having chores. So, I am going explain how to clean his toilet (he has dyspraxia) and then he is going to do it every Sunday night and it will be inspected. If he fails inspection, he does it again until its right! Only then will he be paid pocket money for the week (which we are now bringing in because he is starting to go out with friends on his own at the weekend). I recently did some financial housekeeping and cancelled lots of subcriptions like Spotify premium, EA games, karaoke apps and the like and explained how much they all cost per year. He sort of gets that money doesn't grow on trees now. But not quite..yet. Hope this helps. Not sure it was quite on point....See Moreskippy3
