One piece of advice you wish you'd known before buying a house?
Comments (103)Remember that Rome wasn't built in a day.. Neither the house you want to make a home... If the house feels right. With your Head and your heart, location. Then if it's the house for you it will work.. Move in and adjust each day... Yes you can put your Mark on the house, yes it will be your HOME... But live with it for at least a short while.. Don't be hasty to paint.. See where the sunshine..shines...See where it makes dull on a dark day...So you Can add a mirror maybe to reflect the daylight.. Don't make the pennies stretch any further than they are.. Remember that sadly the bills have to come first..!!!.... Improvise pieces to fit and...if you have to save for the right item....Then save..!!! it will be more practical in the end , rather than buying for the sake of it and having to buy another a few months down the line... Don't fill every room with furniture.... My biggest mistake... Use a piece like a sideboard and think practically the uses.... Is it big enough.. One more draw or cupboard would have better than two smaller ones...don't be afraid to add old stuff that we all now reuse..paint it ...add your own art work... It's a long journey.. To find the destination of all your dreams... And when you feel you have achieved what you have done...then sit back and enjoy all your hard work. And live in your HOME... Enjoy. Relax.. And above all have fun......See MoreWhat does rural living mean to you?
Comments (32)In the Summer the countryside is almost unbeatable. The walks, just the beauty of it all changes your whole perception of the world for the better. There are downsides though. We live down a narrow dead-end lane with only a handful of houses but it's not as quiet as you might think, what with walkers, who think no pavements mean it's ok to walk 3 abreast in the middle of the road, horse riders who use their high position to look over your fence and have a nosy, 'sat nav says so' idiots (FOUR signs at the end of the road that tell them to turn back and they STILL carry on) and cyclists who think that because it's the countryside they can ride at high speed around winding bends and look disgusted that someone may be walking along the road. Also in the Winter it can feel isolated and lonely, with frequently flooded lanes and virtually non-existent public transport. A car is essential, deliveries unreliable and amenities non-existent but even with all the negatives there's something about looking at a stunning view that can whisk all your cares away in an instant. I've attached a couple of pics of MY view so you can make up your own mind...See MoreWhat do you think is best use this bedroom space?
Comments (29)So... managed to find time to discuss it late last night, and we definitely like the idea of being able to make bed 3 larger. I've taken it slightly further in some ways but less in others to try and minimise the cost hopefully as bf thinks that regardless of what we do, it'll end up being prohibitively expensive to re-organise upstairs. This plan would : Keep doorways off the landing to bed 2/3 the same as they are currently (I appreciate the benefits of moving them in terms of not having it right at the top of the stairs, however there's still room for a stair gate at the top of the stairs (should we ever need one), and has never been a problem for us since we've been here regardless of who's stayed (almost 6 years). Removing your study area - we have a separate office/mancave downstairs, and I always work at the dining table even when I had an office space if doing work at home, allowing us to have a bigger family bathroom (maybe a pocket door) with hopefully room for a bath and walk in shower? (as actually the 2 bathrooms we'd be joining are quite compact!) Still quite a small landing area, which I appreciate is useful for general circulation space, but we'd be reluctant to cut into bed 3 more than we have to, and there'd be just enough room I think to have a small window which would hopefully make it feel more airy at least. FYI the pink line I've added is where we get full height ceilings back, as the front half of bed 2/3 mostly have sloped ceilings, except for where the dormers are, but they drop to about waist height at the front. The back wall of the ensuite would be the current back wall of the ensuite again to help reduce costs... Ideally I'd have preferred to creep it forward an extra 10-20cm to give that room to bed 3, however I think for such a small distance it's probably not worth having to knock down, and build another wall. What do people think? ? Obviously would still need to ask builders re cost etc and bf thinks I'm getting hopes up and it'll cost too much... (Anyone got any rough thoughts how much it might be?) but I did point out we could fit most of the bathroom stuff at a later date....See MoreWhat project What DIY project are you working on?
Comments (47)Hi Beano mulling it over but I think I will keep the actual drawers vintage brown with the rest dark blue/matt black. Trying to source handles as the current ones for the most part are shot (even though I like them) The room I think I'd hoping to be dark blue with a pale wall and possibly a papered feature wall?? Still planning and strippjng paint. putting together a mood board at the moment....See Morebuildabear
