How do you select the right hood size. Is there a standard forumla or guidlines?

There is not a single formula for this. It depends on the style, size, location, and height of the space.

Personally I find most hoods horrendous. Most of them look like spaceships that have landed in our kitchens. So my general rule is as invisible as possible.

All hoods need to be a min. of 700mm above the Hob/Oven. The size should match the size of the hob/Oven.

aesthetically one in the ceiling would be preferrable i think, especially with quite a low ceiling. there's also the bora-type option too with the built-in extraction, if you want to spend more money.

This looks like a cgi image and they probably don't have a dedicated canopy unit like this as such. But this is something that could be made using doors and decor panels. Personnally I would design this with either 450 tall or 495 tall doors to make the facia and have the top of the canopy at the same height as the surrounding wall units, decor panels to the sides and underneath all built on a timber sub frame. Ideally for the canopy extractor this will be a model that fits inside a 300 deep cabinet so the canopy isn't sticking out further than the wall units which will make lining up the wall and base units easier.

I love your idea. Please don't be swayed into having a huge deep extractor. Your image is stunning. It is so subtle you don't even realise that it is an extractor. I agree about not having it so close when you are cooking. I would say if you use all the zones all the time then you might find it's not powerful enough but most people only use a couple so it should be fine. For me design always trumps practicality. Each to their own. If you cook with lids on pots then you don't always need to use it either.

Recommend me a ceiling extractor hood

We have a powerful bathroom style centrifugal extractor with grilles above the oven stack and the hob (slightly off centre due to lighting/beam constraints). Reasoning was that I didn't want to box myself in or obstruct view of garden with a hood extractor and we couldn't get a ceiling extractor in for reasons above - plus they are ££. A downdraft was out of budget. Also, I wanted the least dB possible. It works really well. Ceiling is painted matt white and there is no grease on it after 2 years and I do do lot of hob cooking. The grilles are super easy to wipe down - I do it every couple of months, takes 5 mins.
