Type of steel used for planters?

Hi, 1/4 steel was mentioned...can you recall if this has a special name of steel?
I am hearing Cor-ten quite often, is an example of Cor-ten?

Hi Laura,

Those particular planters are not Cor-ten. They tend to rust a little less evenly than Cor-ten. I believe they are hot-rolled and not cold-rolled steel. I'm not sure if Cor-ten has anything in it that might affect food production.

Thank you for your response! This is very helpful. And, hopefully readily available.
Lastly, is the steel painted or coated here to protect from rusting or is this the way it looks when purchased? Thanks again!

Hi Moggles i have a similar renovation starting and have the same thoughts re pendant lighting from steel. Are you actually allowed to have anything coming from the steel itself or won't this negate the fire proofing measures put in place ? So if you are allowed to hang directly from under the steel the next concern is the head height as looking at your photos it does look limited. I have actually bought 2 pendant fittings so i can decide when the time is right which is going to look best. One is a standard pendant with 3 lights dropping from it ... quite ordinary. The other is a long thin led bar that i thought could be hung with as much or little drop from the ceiling as required. Hi no streaky finish if rinsed and buffed, its quite heavy duty but will remove really difficult fat stains. I have to admit to never trying baby oil, it does sound popular.

It may be worth noting that strong bleach can cause corrosion in stainless steels and in general is not recommended. Also continuous exposure to salt water will begin to corrode stainless. 316 is a stainless that has molybdenum added to help protect it from the chlorine that is in salt and bleach, chlorine can break down the layer of chrome oxide that is normally present on the surface of stainless and makes stainless, stainless. A simple environmentally friendly cleaner for sinks is bicarb and a mild (2.5%) peroxide.

Me again:) I’m no expert but have a few ideas. Unsure what aspect your planter is facing, wether it’s in sun or shade. Bamboo would work well just be sure to research the variety. Any of the Sasa (broad leaved bamboo) will grow tall, but be aware that these spread like mad via underground roots so I’d add a weed proof membrane to the base of planter and after a few years they might not look so great in a container. Chimonobambusa Marmorea (marbled bamboo would be a good choice if it’s in shade. Besides bamboo there are a few shrubs and that can do well in containers, Camelias can do well if in shade, Daphne would be lovely if it gets some sun and smells divine. Laurel will pretty much thrive anywhere and you can prune it to whatever shape you like. Trees I’m unsure on but I think so long as they’re grown on dwarf rootstock they might be ok but I’d rather see a larger container. Thuja Occidentalis will do well if you want a wall of green as would yew but it’s slow growing. Ferns can look great if in shade, Polystichum Setiferum (soft shield fern) or Mattecuia (ostrich/shuttlecock fern) can grow fairly tall. Can’t think of any more atm but I’m sure there are many more. What I would do however is treat the planter to some wood preservative or other chosen treatment and line the inside with plastic (remember to put drainage holes in), this will help stop the wood from rotting.

The photo shows untreated planters about 5 months old. They tend to rust more over time, especially if they get wet.
