what edge profile did you use for the island breakfast bar? It looks very square, sort of like its really a piece of stone. very cool.

Hi there. This benchtop was finished in Laminex Pure Mineralstone Gloss with a Euro edge which is a type of acrylic edging. It is basically a square edge laminate top but instead of the edge being clashed with the same laminate (which results in a dark line showing along the join) it is clashed with the acrylic product which gives a much more seamless finish. This edging is only available in a limited colour range and through certain benchtop manufacturers. Hope this helps :-)

Hi @shanagarry80, thanks for your comments! I'm not at home right now so I can't be sure how big the extractor fan actually is but it is over a 90cm hob and oven, so must be at least 90cm. It doesn't look particularly large in situ and the inbuilt lights are very good for illuminating the cooking area. Have a look at Gutmann's website; as I said in one of my earlier comments, other companies do make similar extractors but our kitchen people thought this one best, however our kitchen is now 3 years old and a lot can happen in that time! Hope you have fun designing your new kitchen!

My wife used to restore furniture. She reliably informs me, that the wood is Oak. If she were finishing that to order, to look the same, she would use antique pine Bri-wax for that finish and colour. If you want it washable / wipeable for a kitchen a similar effect could be achieved with a medium oak SATIN varnish. Try one coat to see if the colour is rich enough, if it is, put a clear coat on top. If not, put another coat of medium oak on. Two coats should suffice. Ronseal Satin Medium Oak Varnish. You are going to be better off with a wide plank reclaimed timber than a new bit. However, it is possible to make it look old. The 'Live edge' as you call it isn't actually bark it's just rough cut and then been given a 'chopped' look. Also, not that difficult with a couple of good sanders and an axe. However, She ' the wife', was ( is ) particularly talented in that direction. She assures me, that it's easy !! Apparently the hard part is sourcing the right timber. It needs to be reclaimed for maximum effect, it also needs to be 'Wide plank' as two timbers joined together down the middle won't look right. We've made tables to order with tops similar.

@minipie I could put the fridge freezer on the main run of the kitchen, but that would then reduce the work surface on that wall - and the work surface is sure to be small as it is. If I turn the island 90 degrees to be parallel to dining table then it would mean that neither the hob/oven/fridge/sink would be behind me. I would have to walk from the island across to the main run for everything...... not sure how practical that could be. And if I did do that then, I would have a nice view while working at the island but anyone sitting on stools would be looking at the staircase, which wouldnt be right. @Heather - the space is already 5 x 6 m almost - I dont think we need to add an extension. That should be enough space for a decent kitchen with dining table. I dont need any extra living space either as we do have 2 large lounges. Keep the suggestions coming, thanks!
