What to do with cabinet? Paint colour/ centre panel?
Also, what to do with oval centre panel? The wooden one that’s in there is loose so replace with something else? something arty with what I’ve got?
I do have a small pine bedside that can be used to try out different paint techniques so if anyone would like me have a go at something I’m all ears.
Would love to use coach/car enamel paint (in particular Land Rover marine blue) and getting it to a lacquer style finish using wet and dry sanding. Thinking of leaving the top flat part in a natural wood but aged effect with shoe polish. Replace handles for Victorian style metal ones...pewter, brass? Decoupage on the oval panel? Anyway, that’s my ideas, would love to hear yours. X

Comments (11)We've been faced with a similar dilemma recently and our client wanted to paint the oak panelling. I can understand the wish to brighten. As you can see in the submitted photos, painting the panelling can look attractive when handled well, but I don't think it makes the rooms look more modern. To me it makes the rooms look rather more 'Georgian' since after oak became scarce in the UK by the middle of the 18th Century, painted panelling became much more common. Then in the mid- to late 20th Century, painting over dark oak was seen as a way to escape from what was perceived as dark, gloomy and Victorian. Comments (3)I would consider painting the woodwork a tone darker than the walls, rather than white, it works really well. Skimming Stone is lovely but it will read as quite violet/grey in a North facing room (I have in in my N. facing kitchen). Joa's White will correct the coolness and is recommended for poorly lit North rooms, but it is not the 'contemporary' white that many people are after. Comments (3)Is the tile on the right a deep green? I would look at something taupe (which means it has a red/violet bias) along the Iines of Skimming Stone or Elephants Breath (Farrow and Ball). These colours seem to complement deep greens whereas anything with a yellow tinge could look a bit sickly. Also worth looking at Little Greene Slate which comes in oil based paint. 6 years agoI think the lacquer idea could look good if it works with some brass handles. I know the oval is the wrong shape but could you add a little portrait with crackle glaze over the top? Alternatively use the paint on the sides and choose a big floral wallpaper for the doors. 3rd pic is just showing a decoupage cabinet with the drawers on top!

6 years agoFabulous ideas everyone, keep them coming:-) Carolina, my first thought was also a mirror, maybe an antique style one. Definitely something to think about. Minnie101, I love your inspiration as always, love the blue cameo box image, will definitely test out some decoupage on the little bedside cabinet. To all, must say I’m not much for chalk paint, never liked the feel of it although you can get some good effects plus you can always varnish/wax over it. Just feel for this piece I neeeed colour! Our hallway can get rather gloomy at the best of times (north facing with only the door for daylight). I do love natural wood but the cabinet, although nicely shaped is just cheap pine and not the best quality. I didn’t pay much for it so feel justified in painting it. Emily, i’ll probably get the Land Rover enamel paint just because I want to see how it compares to standard gloss, watch this space! Here’s my inspo pic for hallway although ours hasn’t got the side bit round the stairs, it’s slightly wider and we need storage for bike and shoes etc.

5 years agoJust thought I’d give an update to my painted cabinet. Well... actually haven’t started on the one in question due to time and other priorities etc... so I’m still open to ideas. But! I have been working on my little test cabinet. Still needs some more work to the top and handles, hinges putting back on but nearly there. Experimenting with decoupage and high gloss finish. Lesson I’ve learnt is that if you want a really flat high gloss finish then the initial surface needs to be super smooth. You can see the pattern of the wood grain still showing through about 7 layers of paint and yacht varnish. Not too fussed tho as this piece is intended for the garden, going stuff a plastic liner and plants in the drawer. And also my first attempt at decoupage plant pots:)
