What wall do i put this china hutch against?

Hi All
Just did a major remodel and now have wainscot and crown mold all over.
my china hutch used to be in my dining room but now needs to live in this library/ sitting room.
I don't know if I should put it at an angel against a wall and or I should have it straight against the wall and chairs facing it..
I am really not sure if I can do anything with this piece of furniture now!?
Any ideas would be appreciated..

Comments (51)Pam Gascoyne Hi Tom, As the focal point of the room is quite definitely the fireplace perhaps you should start with making something welcoming and eyecatching be it with candles, fake but really convincing burning gas coals in the grate or even good lighting it needs to really glow. The room is not really huge and perhaps keeping the walls light with, say, a warm very light grey with similar colour linen curtains or white venetian blinds would lighten the whole room and white bookshelves would be really excellent. A rug is essential but keep it cool too like the John Lewis multi stripe grey/neutral. A print or prints are a good idea and with the neutral scheme you could have anything you liked and pick out a pop of colour from the artwork and add to the cushions. The mirror is definitely too big and too gold. If you want to keep it hang it landscape and tone it right down dry brushing silver leaf over the gold but it’s a good place for a striking piece of artwork you like. Comments (23)I love your new plan. You are right to make the doorway from the house to the bathroom, you only need a concrete lintel above it, the wall will be fine! ( Any builder can do this! ) Can you spin the bath round so that it's under the window though?? You will probably have enough room for a storage unit to the left of the door as you walk in. Aswell as running Bagpuss,... we are experienced property developers and i always do all of the plans, and purchasing of materials etc.........also, 50% of the labour with my husband most of the time. Comments (7)Think you may end up spending a fortune looking for a large enough vintage enamel sign. You could always buy a large poster and get it framed instead to hang behind the aga? That way you can wipe the glass down easily. Comments (11)There's another small one on the far end but this is the main radiator. Hmmm it's really interesting that your room is cosy as i've gone to trusty google and can't find anyone who says that radiators don't block the heat. It seems to be a big no no. I'm just so torn between function and fashion. I know it sounds silly. I think part of the problem is it is such a huge window that i would need more than one blind which would look a little odd. 10 years agoI did a photo search wainscoting > Dining Room and was scrolling through the photos that came up. You see buffets but not china cabinets. The buffets are typically below chair rail height - so long and low. As opposed to narrower and taller like your china cabinet.
I agree your china cabinet is a beautiful piece but I don't think painting it will help, and will just decrease the value of it.
Maybe find a place for it just outside the dining room? Otherwise if placed in the center of the long wall you could balance it out with art on either side to give it more width.

10 years agoStraight, flat on its own wall and lighted! You might wrap custom cut foam core or luan with a beautiful wallpaper to place against the backs of the shelves.
