Which carpet colour for a living room????
Our colours in the dining room/kitchen next door:

Could you please help us out with your expert advice?!
We are struggling to find a carpet for our living room. Personally, I would prefer wooden flooring as we have in the dining room/corridor but I do agree with my husband that the floor is rather cold (we live in a 110 year old house at the coast).
So, carpet it is ... our sofa is currently being upholstered in a steel grey cotton velvet:
My husband favours a grey carpet but I think this might be too grey over all? We also have a daughter and a dog which is non-shedding, but we would not want to go too light....
Any advice gratefully received!

Comments (4)Well, one rule is that a wall with a window in it is often the darkest wall (if one of four walls). This might make you want to paint the window wall(s) lighter? (Depending on window size.) Also, you need to identify which walls you want to grab people's attention. These would presumably be the natural focal points at each end? You might want to paint the shorter(?) opposite walls, i.e. the one at the dining end and the one at the living room end, in bold eye-catching colours? Then perhaps use expansive and more 'neutral' light colours on the remaining longer (?) walls. However, it's very hard to visualise without the layout or pics... Ok I'd say White curtains with a sheer curtain too in a silver or pale pink, hung behind that could be used separately as a light defuser or as a lining in winter might work ? Comments (24)Hi emham, there's nothing wrong with a little beige here and there but too much can certainly 'wash out' the character of a room. Don't feel you have to overcompensate by using bold colours or patterned feature walls; it may feel dated within a few years and we humans get bored quickly so giving a room the flexibility to change every six to 12 months without a great deal of expense will give you much more satisfaction. If you are set on painting the walls then perhaps consider an 'antique' or 'off-white'; with good ambient lighting I find these are always the warmest colours. If you're going to go bold then keep the upper part white above the picture rail, its less oppressive on the mind! Gloss the woodwork, freshen u[p the plaster covings and let the period features speak for themselves. For a real burst of colour hang paintings, add textured cushions and throws on the furniture and add a bit of natural warmth with plants .. lots of green plants. A 'soft' central feature light with the correct energy efficient lighting can change the room's ambiance, along with wall lights, table and floor lamps. Depending on your budget, you could strip the carpet back and hope for a wooden floor beneath, but if you haven't the time or budget for installing a reclaimed wood floor, adding a colourful rug over the top of your carpet will do just as well and you could always replace the fabric window blinds with natural wooden shutters for that natural wood feel. Comments (7)Thank you all! I was looking at a light grey fabric couch similar to the one pictured above so it's comforting to know that it won't clash too much. In an ideal world I would just rip out the carpet as jones1987 suggested, but it's the same carpet throughout the house so I would like to avoid it. Does anyone have any opinion on what would be best for the skirting? I'm torn between a crisp white, stripping back to the natural light wood and having a light wooden coffee table as well to keep the room bright and to draw up from the brown, or just to embrace the brown and paint the skirting a dark colour, bit like that pictured below....See More

6 years agoI would have a go at persuading him to give the wood a try, referencing all the opinions on here! A rug really adds a sense of coherence to a seating area, as well as warming your feet up and helping with sound insulation. Even if you went with the carpet option I would probably still recommend a central rug for your room to lighten/brighten and tie your colour scheme together. If I had to choose a carpet I would probably go for a natural wool colour which would be really neutral, look good with all the other elements, but then also use area rugs to lighten/brighten, centralise the furniture elements and balance the colour schemes in each room. This natural wool carpet from Jacaranda Carpets has an interesting texture, and a mushroom tone which goes well with your wallpaper and also has tinge of blue grey like your living room walls :)
