Wood Beams

Those beams add so much character. Were they original or added during the renovation? If added, I would appreciate any info on wood type, stain, etc. This kitchen is so lovely.

The beams were added. They're made from butternut wood and were wire brushed for a rustic texture and then just lightly stained for warmth. Thanks for the inquiry and complement!

They are called tension rods that help tie in both roof planes from spreading out due to thrust / tension [pulling force]. I suspect that the cross members on your photos are possibly only there as a feature and may not be doing much..? Depending on the size of your roof you may not need them. If your roof is fairly straightforward and not too big you might be able to get away with a clean, unbroken sloping ceiling. This can sometimes be done by using larger rafters and purlins. Suggest you employ a qualified Structural Engineer to calculate and size all the structural parts of your project. You will need to brief the Structural Engineer on your requirements such as no tension ties. Hope It goes well.

give it a distressed 'white' paint effect. eg add texture with some wood & grain for character. no need to pick it out and try an restore the bare wood. here's one we did in our own home

I love the idea of taupe! I think it will go nicely with the colour of the brick too. Who would you get to do something like this? Would it be advisable to get this down the same as painting the ugly off yellow rendering inbetween the beams? Any idea how much this would cost?
