Houzz TV: A Dark Bungalow Gains Light, Space and Glamour

When interior designer Sara Slade first visited this cul-de-sac bungalow just outside Cambridge, it hadn’t had much done to it over the years, bar having a large conservatory added to the back. Despite this addition, the house lacked natural light and the space was divided into multiple rooms, a layout that wasn’t working for its new owner.

An architect had already drawn up plans for two extensions, designed to flood the house with light, and Sara came in to rework the internal layout and streamline the aesthetic throughout after the owner found her profile on Houzz.

Sara was also charged with adding a splash of midcentury Miami Beach glamour and a party-friendly design by its sociable owner, who is part of the Northern Soul scene and likes to push back the furniture to dance.

Some lovely ideas here and the renovation is a huge improvement on that wall of uPVC that was there before. I think its cosy and obviously suits its owner well. I do prefer clean lines and there's way too much pink and gold for me. Same goes for the curves. Some of the fixtures might affect the ease of resale one day. However the owner loves it and it's her house so in that sense it's perfect.

The kitchen and bar areas really fit the brief in a classy way. I like it!

Wow! This is so beautiful and an amazing transformation. I love all the pink throughout and the modern/vintage combo. This is my favourite transformation in a long time.

I would love to know where the pink chairs & ottoman featured in the video are from

Lovely, especially the kitchen. The palest of grey with the pink is just lovely. I like the wooden partition. Not sure about the white sofa, but then I’m a clumsy clot so wouldn’t be my choice! A lovely, fresh refurb.

Some of the colours would not be my choice but they work beautifully together and the design is brilliant. A home to be proud of. If I had to change anything it would be the table and chairs - they just don't go with the theme!

Having lived through it once, I dislike mid-century modern, but I have to say this is absolutely wonderful. The best manifestation of MCM that I've seen. The 'Miami' vibe has been authentically captured in both style and colour.

Just love the wooden partition!

But I'll never understand why people choose freestanding baths, which create 'ungetatable' dust and grime pockets in the corner . . .

Super transformation. Kudos to the designer, and congratulations to the owner.

Echo previous comments, they've captured just the right amount of Miami beach vibe. I really like the wooden room divider, it creates softness and warmth.
I usually dislike square tiles but those pink ones, with stronger coloured grout work beautifully, a Japanese soak tub for such a small bathroom might have worked better. I think the colours really lift the darkness found in bungalows, the interior decoration has created a softness that continues throughout the home.
Really impressed 👍🏼

yes, absolutely do not get freestanding baths. Currently house hunting and wherever I see these monstrosities it doesnt completely put me off but I make a mental note finances will be needed to rip it out and put in a "proper" bath!

I love the soft 'white' walls. What colour paint have you used?

Incredible transformation. Highlights for me are the beautiful room divider, use of curves and the murals which create femininity without being too sickly… unlike the bathroom where I think the pink would have worked better as a feature on the freestanding tub rather than the walls - Albion baths do fantastic ones.
