These days, fridges are so much more than just a functional box. They now reflect the diversity of the modern kitchen and playing a significant role in our lifestyles, whether we’re relying on them to store all our fresh food for home-cooked meals, to chill wine for entertaining, or to provide convenient storage for the entire family’s contrasting diets.

1. Healthy Features
Did you know the door of your fridge freezer is the most frequently used door in your house? Therefore, the temperature inside is constantly changing around your food and affecting your fresh produce. However, thanks to a new technology called ActiveSmart™, you and your family’s activity at the fridge door can be monitored – and the airflow adapted accordingly – to create a consistent and stable temperature inside, keeping your food fresh for longer. ‘As we all shop in different ways and have varying storage needs, having a personalised temperature control for your fridge is going make life a lot easier,’ says Fisher & Paykel’s chief designer, Mark Haydon.
Bonus points for energy efficiency. With the refrigerator being the most energy-hungry large appliance in most people’s homes – it’s on 24/7, after all – finding the most energy-efficient design will help cut back on those bills. ActiveSmart™ models win top marks for a reduced energy consumption on average by over 60 per cent.

2. Flush-fit Design
When designing your kitchen, consider integrating your fridge with a built-in design to create a sleek and streamlined effect that’s utterly contemporary. A flush-fit option features durable hinges and allows you to customise your fridge with any cabinet door and handle to allow for an uninterrupted run of units. At the same time, it also allows you to claw back valuable storage space by having your cupboards fitted snugly up to its edges with a minimal gap of just 3mm.
Opt for easy installation. Whether you’re renovating your existing kitchen or designing a new one, the integrated designs have adjustable front and rear feet to allow for uneven floors, alongside adjustable door panels, making them simple to fit.

3. A Stunning Centrepiece
If you’re lucky enough to have the space and are desperate for more food storage for your family, then an American-style fridge freezer could be your answer. Featuring cool, contemporary styling and a beautiful stainless-steel or brushed-metal finish, these dramatic designs bring a sense of theatre to your kitchen, while the wide-open shelf spaces offer ease and flexibility for all the family. So, if the fridge is going to play a big role in your family’s lifestyle, then take time to consider its position in the kitchen when drawing up the plans, so it’s integral to the room scheme.
Look out for useful features. Choose a design with flexible shelf positions, so that you can customise your fridge freezer’s interior space to suit your family’s needs, and with large storage bins that can be fully extended for easy access and cleaning.

4. Flexible Cooling Options
Are you a weekly food shopper or a grab-a-bag kind of consumer? Consider your lifestyle and whether you actually need a traditional fridge at all. Maybe you could benefit from a smaller, functional option that would suit the way you cook, eat and entertain? The CoolDrawer™ (pictured above), a multi-temperature cooling drawer, has been designed to be integrated easily within layout – whether that’s next to the sink, built into an island, in a pantry or nestled in a separate bar area – can be designed to match your existing cabinetry and be tailored to how you live. For example, if you’re a busy family always on the go and need more long-lasting food options, a simple button changes it to a freezer drawer, while ‘wine mode’ will ensure your whites are chilled to perfection.
Perfect for the all-singing-all-dancing kitchen island. With the evolution of the kitchen island dictating how we design and use our cooking and eating spaces, a cooling drawer offers the ideal solution if you want all the action to happen at this central spot. ‘Kitchen islands are now part of the living space, where people cook, socialise, dine and work, so you need design and functionality working together,’ says Haydon. ‘This has led to appliances being fitted into the kitchen island, making the CoolDrawer™ the ideal solution.’

here's ours - with a little embellishment
Cool Drawers are nice in theory, but ours is pretty much useless in practice. Make sure that you see one in reality before you buy as the usability of storage space is very very limited in comparison to a 'traditional' fridge. On the plus side the temperature regulation is good, so it is ideal for hibernating the tortoise over the winter. Ours has been relegated to the utility room for eggs and beer. I won't be buying another cooldrawer when this one dies.
could not disagree more - ours works really well with decent & accessible capacity. plus makes fridge section that bit higher and therefore easier for everyday usage
