The Starring Role: Played by Spiced Honey
Late last year, Dulux announced its colour of 2019, Spiced Honey – a warm amber tone that promises to energise your home and set a positive mood. Inspired by the beauty and versatility of honey itself, this colour can be used to create a variety of moods throughout your home depending on what shades it’s teamed with.
For example, when paired with earthy ochres, cool greys and graphic blacks, Spiced Honey becomes sophisticated, offering the perfect spot for contemplation. It can also create a soothing space for rest and reflection when blended with muted pastels, warm woods and tactile textiles.
Play around with layers. This year you’ll see colour being layered around corners or architectural features like windows, rather than blocked in single feature walls. “We’re changing the perception of a room as a plain box by painting beyond the corners and creating divisions between colours on the walls,” says Marianne.

The Supporting Acts: Played by Four Colour Palettes
Explore the different ways to use this incredibly nurturing colour in your home with this introduction to the four supporting colour palettes. “Although she is the queen bee of decorating this year, Spiced Honey has a hive of worker colours that create trend palettes, which are distinctive but connected,” explains Marianne.
Used together in layers, these colours are much more effective at bringing to life a richer story of colour in a home. Marianne continues: “Think’ is a collection of caramel and pink hues with two gutsy colours, Cobalt Night and Finest Burgundy, that anchor it firmly in modernity. ‘Dream’ is a combination of warm and cool, very alluring and grown-up smoky pastels, and ‘Love’ is a collection of rich colours for creating interiors that encourage closer connections with those we care for most. Finally, ‘Act’ buzzes with energetic and bright hues, which make spaces that uplift and excite a flagging world and weary soul.”

New Colour Ideas to Try This Year…
…In the Kitchen
Spiced Honey has a raw quality that mimics nature and becomes extremely adaptable when pairing it with different materials, particularly in the kitchen.
Try painting units in this warm shade, and then marry it with cool materials, such as a pale timber floor, white stone worktops and leather cabinet handles for a modern Nordic feel that’s clean and simplistic.

…In the Living Room
For a cosy, relaxed space where everyone feels at ease, use warming honey neutrals on all the walls to create a cocooning effect, but keep the ceiling paler to encourage a sense of light and space.
Then, into this comforting mix, introduce well-loved wooden furniture (family heirlooms are ideal), touchy-feely fabrics such as sumptuous wool, and exciting black accent pieces for an inviting setting.

…In the Kid’s Room
If you don’t have the time (or patience) to redecorate an entire kid’s room, but you’re keen to give it a refresh, then update your existing room colour with a flash of paint in the form of a stencil or feature wall. For example, add a band of honey hue to instantly bring the space to life with a new energy and positive vibe. Plus, kids will love how visually delicious it appears – tell them to imagine hot buttered toast or salted caramel ice cream!
Marianne suggests putting a unique stamp on a kid’s room with a creative paint pattern. “You don’t have to be too ambitious either,” she says. “Simply try painting an oversized hexagon or simple bold geometric pattern, in a soft grey like Angora Blanket, on a small area.”
