The baking center to the right of the range includes a large cabinet with pocket doors, shelves for supplies and electrical outlets for a stand mixer and other small appliances. “It’s an elegant way not to have to move the mixer,” Melissa says. “I’m a baker, so I’m really happy about it.” A glass-front beverage and wine fridge sits below. A large pantry cabinet with pullouts for dry goods is to the right. https://www.houzz.com/magazine/kitchen-of-the-week-creamy-whites-and-grays-brighten-things-up-stsetivw-vs~153893607
Wide drawers to the left and right of the range hold pots and pans. Narrow drawers on top store utensils and potholders. A lower corner cabinet to the left includes a pullout for small appliances. “It’s one of those extras you don’t know you should pay for, but it’s totally worth it,” Melissa says. https://www.houzz.com/magazine/kitchen-of-the-week-creamy-whites-and-grays-brighten-things-up-stsetivw-vs~153893607
Here’s a closer look at the zellige-style, handmade glazed 4-by-4-inch weathered white tiles with a glossy finish that shows variation in depth and tone. “They have that perfectly imperfect look,” Melissa says. “They’re like a version of a rustic subway tile.” Floating reclaimed-wood shelves let the backsplash stand out and coordinate with the wood detail on the new custom plaster range hood, as well as a new mantel in the adjacent family room. The cabinet pulls are handcrafted solid brass with a matte bronze finish. The new island design creates a simplified work triangle among the sink, range and fridge. Contemporary gray faux leather stools sit against three 12-inch-deep cabinets that store cookbooks, serveware and tea and coffee. “Those cabinets add lots of extra storage,” Biermann says. A pair of concrete pendant lights hangs above, coordinating with the stool color and providing a raw detail that works with the rustic handmade backsplash tile and wood details. “I searched far and wide and kept coming back to the concrete and bell shape because it adds a sense of organic-ness,” Melissa says. All the lighting, including relocated LED recessed lights in the ceiling and undercabinet lighting over task areas, are on dimmers for flexibility. https://www.houzz.com/magazine/kitchen-of-the-week-creamy-whites-and-grays-brighten-things-up-stsetivw-vs~153893607
New Shaker-style inset maple cabinets in a light gray, creamy white walls and ceiling (Swiss Coffee by Dunn-Edwards) and a white handmade tile backsplash significantly brighten the room and give it a cheerful vibe. “That pale gray is a neutral that pops against the creamy walls,” Melissa says. “It now feels cozy but modern.” Biermann took the cabinets all the way to the ceiling to maximize storage. She also created a more streamlined island with an eye-catching marble-look quartz countertop with waterfall ends. “The rectangular shape improves the aesthetic and allowed us to create wide walkways on all sides,” she says. Biermann and the homeowners ditched the previous wall oven arrangement for a range, freeing up the former area for a baking center, one of Melissa’s must-have features. An upgraded stainless steel French door refrigerator and freezer stands in the same location as the previous refrigerator. GE Profile’s Opal 2.0 nugget ice maker lets you have “good ice” at home for your cocktails or mocktails. Designed to fit on countertops and low enough to clear cabinets, the device makes one pound of chewable nugget ice per hour and holds up to three pounds. It comes in stainless steel and black stainless steel finishes and has built-in Wi-Fi that lets you set the ice-making schedule via an app.
8. Hardworking sink stations. As kitchens expand into multiple zones, the kitchen sink zone is following suit with what’s known as a workstation. Though relatively new to the market, workstations are quickly catching on. Built-in ledges support movable components such as a cutting board, colander and racks for draining and drying. It combines functions you might perform elsewhere in the kitchen, limiting the need to move back and forth between those areas.
7. Shades of charcoal and gray. While Houzz research shows that white remains the most popular color for kitchen countertops, many manufacturers are betting on interest in darker colors. In October, Silestone by Cosentino launched its Loft series, which features shades of charcoal and grays, as in the Corktown style shown here.
Cabinet Storage 8. Drawer and cabinet organizers. It’s getting rare these days to open a cabinet and see a basic cavity with a shelf, or a drawer that’s merely empty space. Inserts, rollouts, pullouts and dedicated dividers maximize capacity and organize everything efficiently. Rev-a-Shelf’s new 4WTMD drawer system is intended to get a household’s junk drawer in order. The natural maple tiered insert fits standard 24-inch-wide and 22-inch-deep drawers and has pull-up trays and adjustable dividers.
"Signature Kitchen Suite’s new 24-inch undercounter dual-drawer refrigerator allows users to program the temperature of each drawer separately, from minus 7 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. You can also monitor and adjust the temperatures from a smartphone app. The appliance will be available at the end of March."
"Silestone’s new engineered-quartz collection, named Loft, takes inspiration from industrial-style dwellings in cities such as New York, Detroit, London and Barcelona, Spain. The collection features several concrete-look styles, including Seaport, shown here in the countertops, backsplash and island cladding."
Pick Drawers, Not Doors The best part about drawers is that they display all your flatware and utensils at once, which allows for easy grabbing. You don’t have to get on your knees and peer into the back of the cabinet to see what’s available. You can also store your larger kitchen items in drawers. Drawers wider than 30 inches can stow plenty of pots and pans.
"Don’t limit accessible corners to your lower cabinets. This easy-to-reach upper cabinet opens like an accordion and doesn’t waste any storage space."
"You can also get corner cabinet organizers with kidney-shaped, half-moon and other creative sliding shelves."
"Look for corner cabinet bases that effectively eliminate the need for rummaging and reaching. They aren’t all the same, though. You have options, be it a convenient three-drawer base (left) or a traditional Lazy Susan."

3. Furniture-Style Function Designer: James Trinko of Haddock + Cotter Interior Decoration (also the homeowner) Location: Old Chatham, New York Size: 500 square feet (46 square meters) Homeowners’ request. This was designer James Trinko’s own kitchen renovation. “I used much of the existing kitchen but completely transformed it,” he says. “I knew I wanted open shelving because of the low ceilings, and I knew I wanted a white kitchen.” He ripped out the upper cabinets and painted the base cabinets a soft gray that reads like a white (Classic Gray by Benjamin Moore). He also added 6-by-9-inch white ceramic tile to create a backsplash that reaches to the ceiling. Island design. Furniture-style with legs and open shelving. “The island went through several iterations, as I was not able to convey my vision accurately,” says Trinko, who used photos on Houzz for inspiration. “I wanted it as large as I could go but wanted ample circulation. I also knew I wanted the entire thing up on legs so it felt more like a piece of furniture rather than cabinetry. The open shelving was derived for two reasons. One was the space left over from using standard cabinet boxes, and the second was that I ...
2. Narrow and Nifty Designer: Terri Sears of Hermitage Kitchen Design Gallery Location: Nashville, Tennessee Size: 352 square feet (33 square meters) Homeowners’ request. “The original kitchen did not give them ample counter space or good storage solutions,” says designer Terri Sears, whom the homeowners found through Houzz. “We relocated the ovens to give more counter space to the right of the cooktop. This also gave an open feeling to the space. We installed the microwave in a different area to give zones to the kitchen and spread things out. “The clients really wanted a Scandinavian feel to trickle over from other areas in the home. They wanted to bring in a natural color palette that made the room feel bigger. We felt it was necessary to bring white cabinets in on the top to visually enlarge the space.” Island design. Narrow rectangular shape with a quarter-sawn oak base and a white quartz countertop with a waterfall edge. “This really needed to look like a piece of furniture as well as allow two people to comfortably sit at it,” Sears says. The semicustom Shaker-style cabinets and drawers feature brushed satin nickel pulls that complement the stainless steel appliances. “Part of the benefit of going semicustom was that we were able to add in some elements that make them look higher-end,” Quarles says. “We also included convenience items like a lazy Susan, a pullout trash can, a cookie sheet pullout and spice racks.” The gas range has four burners and a griddle in the center. A modern wall-mounted stainless range hood with built-in lighting hangs above. “The gas range is so efficient and much easier to cook on than the electric range we had before,” Carolyn says. https://www.houzz.com/magazine/kitchen-of-the-week-white-gray-and-peaceful-in-tennessee-stsetivw-vs~141018868
