SYI: 1607
classic italian mid century floor lamp. GW: good find! Let's think about it but we would rather go with neutral tones for most stuff, and then color touches here and there like the Womb. (for the next floorlamp I was thinking about a Panthella or similar). SY: sure, and I know I'm not decorating spaces - just trying to throw in a few things to give the kitchen some context. Right now I'll put in a Mouille three arm in black because that's what Sketchup has in its model library. You'll need more than one floor lamp in this house! :)
SY: I wonder - would you consider repurposing the closet by the back door into a built-in coffee/appliance station? We could mount the Eames hang-it-all just inside the kitchen for a drop zone. Vacuum, broom, etc, could go in the closet in the family room...GW: as mentioned in the other pic I was considering the back closet as a mini mudroom but kitchen extension could surely work if it doesn't feel odd to have to step "out" of the kitchen to access some appliances. For the hang-it-all I don't picture where you would put it sorry but the vaccuum, mop, etc...could definitley go in the basement (or in the large family room closet)
SY: turning your back closet into an extension of the kitchen by making it a coffee / appliance station... ? GW: It could work, storage on top, microwave in middle and coffee station (I got a bit a coffee gear but I don't use it all the time), liked pictured here okay. (and then wine storage or cooler at the bottom?) On a sidenote: the backdoor opens to the righthand and it leaves the staircase going down open, I feel like that could be a hazard for my kids when they unbundle + if you leave the door open you cannot access the closet/cabinet. If we actually replace the door with a glassdoor, could it open to the lefthand and then block the staircase access instead? Thanks
SY: what small appliances do you have that sit out on the counter? toaster? (toaster oven?) coffee maker? can you send me dimensions of those please? GW: toaster=H7.5" x W11" x D6.5" ; coffee maker=H14" x W13" x D6.5" + coffee grinder=H6.5" x W3.5"; blender=H15" x W9" ; boiler=H11" x W9"; kitchenaid stand mixer=H14" x W13" x D13"; microwave=H10" x W17.5" x D12.5"; bread board=W17" x D11"; dishrack which I hate but you need one=W18" x D16"; fruit bowls= we always have lots of fruits in bowls for easy grab so they have a footprint, I would say total scattered surface=W22" x D22" but that can change.
SY: ph5 (Poulsen) - 20" diameter for over the dining table - in the colors of the family room storage doors. But do I spy this fixture already over your dining table in blues? Shall I show that? GW: Yes let's consider the current blue ph5 20". Although we'll keep the retro touch of the family room cabs, I would stay away of orange :-/ SY: got it! I love it and it's currently over your dining table in the model. :)
SY: getting into just a bit of cabinet functionality. You need pull out trash and recycling I assume - how does something like this strike you? GW: I think a trashcan will be in our way but I like to have a pedal. The desing above is very functional but could the trash bin be as large as can be? No need for paper towel feature. SY: yes. Right now I have a 15" wide cabinet for both turned like this, but you can do a separate pullout for trash and recycling, or a larger single pull out. We'll work that out with cabinet maker.
SY: terrazzoesque floor to wood transition - really like! GW: yes I like it very much, nice transition it's one on of the first samples I uploaded correct? We were debating with Sophie last Saturday on the use of different materials for floors, TBD with you netx meeting. Thanks. SY: yes, this image is from a house we discussed below!
SY: a deadend galley rather than a U - and so many things to love here. GW: Love it indeed! Lot's to comment here: Wood+black+white I like but touch of color missing? If you think I have enough cabinets and countertop surface than we could consider a deadend?! I like the full wood grain wall of (see through?) shelves that opens to the hallway behind; would you do the same with the wall looking at the atrium? replacing the top half of the current pocket door by that wooden see through shelving instead of simple window opening, that could be really cool! If you move away the rosewood furniture, that kitchen wall there facing the atrium could be reshaped...? Could be a small section plain wall and a larger section half top wall with see through shelf like above? It would not be a deadend actually since the bottom half of the wall will closed but it could still feel very open. Sorry a drawing would be easier, do you follow me ;-)? SY: lol, I think for the most part! I'm playing with this sort of thing as the see through element to the atrium, Yes!
SY: probably not in black for you (right? I do kinda love it in context here), but this is terrific. GW: Very cool! I personnaly like black very much but I think Sophie wishes a touch of color. Love the contrast of wood and black, white faucet, wood panel backsplash! Looks like cork for the sliding cabinet door, correct? (Cork is an option too). Actually, the color kick could come from pendant lights...?!
Detail
Living room. SY: pretty. SY: can you send me dimensions of the sofa please? I'd love to give you a furniture plan in the living room that I know works if we open up the space to dining. GW: sofa = 83" x 36"
book/souvenir shelf, potential family or study
Chair detail, oak. SY: nice, love this design
Current coffee table I don't like anymore...
hallway
Will go in a living space but don't know where, size H51" x W36"
Sophie's chair for either sun room or living room. SY: yeeesssss
Potential for hallway
Dining table 89" x 38" (a middel leaf of 38" folds out to extend the table when needed). SY: perfect, thank you. So expanded length is 89+38? GW: correct, 89+38. The pic shows the 89 length only. (Or does 89 include the 38" expansion leaf?)
Dining table detail, oak + laminate. SY: lovely
just using this image to ask you please to measure your dining table for us and share a photo? (I think you're keeping it?) Also your chairs? Any other key pieces that you know you will bring into the dining and adjacent spaces (sun room, family room, living room)? They are all part of our context so I need to keep them in mind. GW: I just did upload the main pieces, there are few. We're slowly adding scandinavian like design to our interior.
Nice wood grain on the island and very nice yellow tone on cabinets. SY: pretty
Teal color is trendy but we belive is lacks luminosity. I like the colored faucet: white or black or color? SY: nice idea for the faucet. Will keep that in mind. I like this teal, myself, but since we are working with such saturated existing colors (closet doors and red bedroom wall) I agree that this is more earthy than we want in this context.
Are you considering geometric backsplash tiles if any? Those above are trendy, is it cliche to you? SY: I like the effect, but seems as if it could be high maintenance for cleaning behind a stove...
Wood slats peninsula over terrazzo floors, pretty. Looks like oak. SY: yes, I love the wood slatted look.
another terrazzo counter top, maybe not pink but at least soft color tone. Slik drawer handles, paneled hood.
terrazzo counter top, paneled receding, cool lights. Are you considering any small bookshelf? (maybe not as tall as here). Also interesting design for the red breakfast nook that closes behind pull out doors?! I guess we don't have enough room to play with that. Note the microwave in a shelf is fine. SY: will add book space. Your pantry could totally open up to some great color...
SY: fridge and narrow pantry unit also here, though this is a 24" fridge rather than standard 36". GW: Got it
here's a good image of a fridge that is not paneled, with a narrow pantry beside it. Lovely. GW: Got it, ok for tall pantry. SY: check
SY: fridge and pantry in tall white receding group. GW: cool kitchen, love that table (bench is fun too). Very neat receding indeed!
nice effect of fridge (paneled white here) with pantry and ovens. You don't have room for the ovens. :) GW: yes very nice! I get it on the pantry ok that works, wish I could panel the fridge but I know it's pricey. Btw looks like there 2 ovens in the Woodruff kitchen but I honestly only need 1. That oven will locate below counter level I presume. SY: yes, the most affordable option is a single oven-cum-range unit.
SY: This back wall is similar to the dimension of your back kitchen wall. We'd take the oven out 18" or so from the corner as shown here, then have 24" or so to the right of the oven, and then do a tall narrow pantry with fridge. (You could panel the fridge but wouldn't have to - it's nice and seamless, of course, but $$$.) The fridge is already a massive element, so adding a full height cabinet next to it actually tends to give the fridge context - as well as lend good storage opportunity. GW: OK I see better now thanks, so yes a narrow tall pantry works! Right side of the fridge like here? SY: possibly
blue sheet marmoleum at a friend and client's house. GW: We would very much enjoy lino or marmoleum but not a fan of that "cloudy" effect sorry :-(. SY: got it
the wood floors at a recent home we redid on pickwick. simple nail down finish in place oak. GW: yes very nice! No gloss for wood or paints please
natural stained oak in recent SYH project. GW: Yes that looks like what we love. Btw we do not like glossy/shiny floors but rather matte! SY: got it, agree.
Note: there is a character max in the comment boxes. I fear we are approaching it in the next image; it will let you keep typing but then just not show what you wrote. :/ Put your response to my inquires on this kitchen here,or in some other image from this kitchen. :) GW: yes I noticed. Follow up comment: How much cabinet volume do you usually account for for such a kitchen? Cause I currently store dry goods in a regular cabinet and that works just fine. SY: I usually give as much as I can. :) Yours is a small kitchen. If you are used to just putting pantry goods in an upper or lower cabinet, then that's fine. You must tell me, really, based on your current cabinet usage, how much you think you need. I will pin some images of fridge-with-pantry. I think it's a nice look and not too massive.
the U layout. GW: I like it! Large counter surface. Like the hidden hood and the hidden fridge. Imagine a skylight on top and an opening towards the atrium instead of the painting above the faucet....Probably no stools since half of the length of the counter would have a raised obstruction hiding the view. To consider: bookshelves on the width of the white counter? SY: This layout is very similar to the U option we are trying for you. Two things I worry about with the above. 1) that sink smashed into the short end. I'd prefer it to be in the peninsula, and since you have your raised obstruction there, I think that would be fine. Ok? GW: yes OK makes sense 2) there is no full height pantry here for drygoods. I can get you a narrow one (18" wide or so), next to the refrigerator, and still have the stove feel not smashed in the corner, though it won't be as much space around the cooktop as you see here. I think you need a full height pantry. ok? GW: That's a tricky one, it would look like a second full height like the fridge next too each other correct? I fear it will look too massive. Could we have cabinets instead of the boards on top? How much cabinet volume storage do you usually ...
nice layout as well as color blocking - could add a back to the island to obscure the mess (instead of stools). GW: color blocks are trendy now, that's what I tried to mean with Memphis style but we would prefer softer tones. This kitchen looks a bit too sharp and contemporary don't you think? Would you add a back all along the island, in my mind I feel like that back/obstruction should start from a wall reason why I think of U shape? SY: yes, I see what you mean by stark. I propose we take our cue for the colorful bits from the other colors throughout the house. I think you could do the island obstruction with an island, U or galley, equally effectively. GW: OK that works so let's keep the U plan for now and agreed on colors. SY: note that we have three options that all have pros and cons - galley, U, and L/island. Will keep working on them and get any that work in front of you for consideration.
layout and island thoughts...GW: maybe bookshelves on the width of the island and not the entire lenght exposed into the dining room? SY: hm, ok, will consider.
terrazzo top instead of floors! interesting. I like this use of color. GW: don't like those particular colors but yes I was also thinking of terrazzo as counter top but fear it will be overwhelming? At least on floors terrazzo is more discreet, it's there you have it but it's not a statement. I think Sophie doesn't like the fragment/speckle desing on counters she says it never looks wiped clean :-) But this big one is fun I agree! SY: there are some speckly countertops I think you would like - not so busy as this one. If you do a solid floor (wood or linoleum) the speckly countertop can be a really nice nod to midcentury. GW: OK I get it, let's see what option looks nicer?
pulls. GW: I like very much! Convenient and elegant, (just wonder if the top section is a bit fragile)
cabinets and pulls. GW: I liked that pic, very nice!
pulls. GW: very good, you got it!
SY: Incidentally, do you want a microwave? Above counter or below? Shelf like this or built-in? GW: good point, we use the microwave very little but it's useful and I think it's an ugly appliance. So feel free to locate it anywhere, my feeling would be below. (I guess we're on the same page about not having cabinets above the counter and raised obstruction correct) SY: correct, and ok on the microwave. Just a shelf version like this, though, correct? We could also stash in the full height pantry cabinet - behind a closed door. GW: yes a shelf version as above will be just fine thanks.
SY: this turquoise door is great too for your back door - it shows up better in one of the other images from this project. I see how this obscures your view out from the kitchen, rather than diners' view in - and that is the reverse of what you want. Got it. Also here you can see the transition from the blue tile to the wood. Nice. GW: I see the transition ok, BTW I think we might go light tone for the wood floors
this is the kitchen with the blue floor. nice color and partial division. GW: OK I see, it's cute but do I need those cabinets on top. That's a clear option for division. But we'll open up the space by cutting down the wall, correct? So instead of a division why not creating an obstructed view into the kitchen...
hm, here's a colorful option. GW: I think we might lean more to pastel colors, a bit less punchy. I'm curious to consider a dark floor...Also, I like the idea of sseing through the back door into the yard. Don't remember if the current backdoor is too pretty to be replaced? SY: no, it's plain and flat. I say upgrade to something like this! GW: ok for the backdoor it would be fun to have it that style! Should the frame of the door be the same color tone as the entry door or than as the kitchen color? SY: I will work on colors in model!
color. GW: Color for sure! But than where, in the tiles or in the cabinet doors, or than both? Yellow is always bright, I like it but to discuss with Sophie. SY: What wall colors that are there now, if any, do you think you'll keep? I remember Sophie loved the red bedroom walls. I think I would nix the purple, yellow and green that are all in the living/dining/family rooms now, and just paint white. BUT I would keep the red bedroom walls, and the yellow, orange and red of the closet doors, and pull those colors plus some softer greens and blues maybe into your cabinets / tile / etc in the kitchen. Thoughts? GW: My plan was to paint everything white but the touches of red that Sophie likes, although kids will have a (little) word to say for their respective bedrooms. The exisiting colored doors and cabinets will stay, actually some doors are grey and don't like grey. For the kitchen there will be a need for color to punch up the wood and white, by pastel I mean soft tone correct but Sophie does not like green so much. (Sidenote: ultimately I think master bath will go blue and the guest/kids bath red or pink). Color consistency could be blue/red/yellow. SY: got it
terrazzo - also that yellow tile! GW: cool vibe
terrazzo. GW: out of all tones we would avoid grey, the grain is nice though. I like the tall wooden cabinet! SY: got it on the gray. The tall cabinet is akin to what I'm talking about in terms of a full height pantry for you somewhere.
terrazzo tiles - though these are larger
terrazzo flooring. GW: if the space is bright would you prefer to contrast the floors with a darker tone? SY: My gut says light - see my comment below. But I will need to play with the options in the model to figure out the right balance.
terrazzo flooring abutting wood. GW: ok I see what you mean. (will be much less worried with Hadrien spilling all over ;-) SY: yes that would be a huge pro
sliding cabinet doors. GW: yes very pretty but I thought cork was not an option because too complicated to install on plywood.
