Visit an Architect’s Colour-happy Contemporary Home

In this episode of Houzz TV Live, architect Richard Keating of RKA Architectural Design Studio takes viewers inside his renovated Scottish home, which once belonged to his grandmother. Richard updated the 100 sq m, semi-detached bungalow with a playful contemporary style for his family of four.

In the kitchen, blue cabinets, pale pink Formica worktops and accents of green, black and white liven up the fun design, while a skylight tube offers a peekaboo view into the room from the landing above. The double-height living room features a striking staircase with exposed birch plywood. And in the bathroom, a curved wall of shimmery tiles in various shades of blue and green creates a memorable moment.

No doubt the whimsical colors and design make Scottish weather much more enjoyable to experience. I am so impressed by this architect’s creativity and talent, makes a white kitchen look rather pedestrian in comparison.

Hallelujah! A home with some color! Cheery, fun, nicely designed, and a home for "regular" folks, ie, not just the wealthy. Thank you!

I like the whole house, especially the kitchen. Generally, pink wouldn't be my choice but in this case, it's a stellar feature. Good job of making the most of a smaller space house.

Wow! I love the round shaft of light that goes all the way thru to the main floor. So many good ideas. Not having a graspable handrail on the stairs would never pass house inspection in our region, but I do like the clean look of it. Nice to see a reno from Scotland. Thank you.

Beautiful use of color! Wish we could see the other rooms. What will you do with the outside areas?

This is very exciting! I lOVE 1960/70s house transformations and the use of colours, light and space is fantastic. Amazing transformation.

I would love to know where the wall tiles used in the bathroom were from.

Not only would no builder in Tampa agree to do things like this, they wouldn't know where to begin. Even 'high end custom' homes all end up looking the same- white cabinets, large format marble, and huge chandeliers.

Love the blue tiles in the bathroom. Blue is a very calming and refreshing color not only for Bathrooms but also in the kitchen.
