As the world opens up many of us are ready for new adventures and Dulux’s 2022 Colour of the Year, Bright Skies™ is the ideal hue to get us going. Bring this airy shade into your home to create a space that feels optimistic and uplifting, as well as calm and rejuvenating.
For Dulux’s creative director, Marianne Shillingford this light blue is a breath of fresh air. “In 2021, we sought firm ground to give us the courage to embrace change. In 2022, it’s time to open up, take a breath and see things with fresh eyes,” she says.
Here we look at how we can combine the cool, airy tones of Bright Skies™ with a natural palette to create a space where we can get back to nature and celebrate the great outdoors.

Why it works…
“We all need this colour right now, a visual breath of fresh clean air to blow away the past few months where we have mostly been hiding indoors,” says Marianne. “This colour connects us with the sky and opens up the spaces in which we use it in the most uplifting and refreshing way. It also looks amazing with natural materials, earthy neutrals and glorious with indoor plants”
To create a space where we can harness the healing power of nature in our homes the Dulux team have put together a colour palette they call The Greenhouse. Let’s take a look…

Fly solo
Bright Skies™ is an easy colour to live with and can work as a shade on its own. Here, for example the pale blue living room walls surround a comfortable seating area to create a calm, yet uplifting atmosphere.
Try adding a soft blue rug like this one to blend in with the walls and bring the colour down to the floor.
Bonus tip: If you’d like to stick to one colour on your walls and joinery, bring in complementary hues and textures with accessories. Metallics, wood and of course masses of house plants are ideal for adding texture and interest.

Go for tone on tone
For a fresh feel in a child’s room, pair Bright Skies™ with the zingy tones of River Valley. These two shades work beautifully together to give the space a fun, vibrant feel.
Complement these fresh outdoor shades with warm woods, rattan and plenty of plants for a room that feels welcoming and snug.
Bonus tip: Not sure how to make a loft space work? Get creative by thinking of the sloped ceiling as a continuation of the wall, as they’ve done here - the bright blue on the lower half of the wall is balanced by the softer shade above.
Bottom wall painted in River Valley; upper wall in Bright Skies™, both Dulux.

Add inviting greens
Bring sky blue down to earth by pairing it with soft shades of green. A soft olive hue works perfectly in a kitchen as it gives the space a relaxed, welcoming feel.
Here, for example the green cabinets and upper wall bring a cosy feel to the kitchen-diner, while the strip of fresh blue provides a revitalising pick-me-up.
Bonus tip: To bring even more of the outdoors into your home, try adding touches of warm wood to your scheme. You can do that with wooden furniture and worktops as they’ve done here.

Lighten up
The optimistic feel of Bright Skies™ makes it the perfect shade for those wanting to feel productive and positive in their home office. Boost the colour’s airy hues by teaming it with a soft white, such as the Moon Cloud walls in this space. The desk area is zoned with a wall of light tones and surrounded by uplifting blue on either side.
