Wetrooms
As baths are an occasional treat, a shower is really the main daily washing event. And it seems these areas are getting the luxury treatment, too, as Houzz users are looking for something a little more special than the standard shower enclosure.
The search term ‘walk-in shower’ rose in popularity by 116% in 2021 versus 2020, and there were 518% more searches for ‘wetrooms’.
If you’re planning a wetroom shower, like this one designed by Fiona Duke Interiors, consider positioning the controls at the opposite end to the shower. This will enable you to get the temperature just right without being sprayed with a burst of cold water.

Colour and character
Houzz users are becoming increasingly creative with their home colour choices, and this confidence doesn’t stop in the bathroom. It seems we’re no longer set on a minimal white washspace and are embracing a more varied palette.
In 2021, the terms ‘pink bathroom’ and ‘blue bathroom’ both appeared in around 50% more searches than in 2020, while ‘green tiled bathroom’ saw an increase of 124%. Dark tones are also popular, with the search term ‘black shower’ seeing a rise of 66% in 2021 compared to 2020.

Trendy terrazzo
Interesting surfaces are also key when it comes to adding character to your home, and a popular example is terrazzo. This beautifully flecked material is popping up all over the home, on kitchen worktops, hallway floors and, of course, in bathrooms. On Houzz, the term ‘terrazzo’ saw a 288% jump in 2021’s searches compared to those in 2020.
Professionals on Houzz are uploading some stunning examples of terrazzo bathrooms to the site, such as this design by Indie & Co. The speckled surface covers the worktop, the walls and the floor, turning the small room into something altogether more special.

Vamped-up vanities
Storage is a topic that never goes out of fashion, so when clutter-busting is combined with good design, it’s always popular. This could explain why the bathroom vanity unit is a favourite with designers and homeowners right now.
The search term ‘bathroom vanity’ rose by 50% in 2021 compared to the same time in 2020. In response, more and more projects uploaded to Houzz are featuring creative and stylish designs.
As well as sleek, contemporary wall-hung versions, a focus on sustainability is prompting some beautiful upcycled designs. This vintage cabinet, for example, has been converted into a double vanity unit by the team at Run for the Hills.

Pampering for the pooch
Bathrooms aren’t just for humans, according to a number of Houzz users. The search term ‘dog shower’ has risen by 116% in 2021 compared to the same time in 2020.
Surprised? We’re not. Pets in general have always caught the eye of Houzz users, with editorial stories about cats and dogs proving endlessly popular. Now, many more people have brought a furry friend into their home during lockdown.
Data from our 2021 UK Houzz & Home Study also highlights a growing desire among homeowners to move to a rural location. So it stands to reason that country dog walks are prompting the Houzz community to look for practical solutions for combatting muddy paws.

It’s all about the long, relaxing soak for Houzz users this year, as luxurious baths have risen in popularity. The search term ‘freestanding bath’ rose by 228% in 2021 compared to 2020, while the term ‘slipper bath’ increased by 237%.
The curved designs of these types of baths are reminiscent of the trend for soft-shaped, comfortable furniture we’ve seen at design festivals this year. The hammock bath in this space, designed by Studio Milne, takes the idea even further. It would be impossible not to relax if you found yourself lying back in this smooth black vessel.
