Trends: Style Steals from Milan 2014 - Oversized Pieces
Decorating ideas to steal from the world’s top furniture fair
Milan’s Salone del Mobile is one of the world’s key furniture fairs, where international buyers and editors flock to shop and be inspired by the latest products and trends. While most visitors’ eyes are firmly on the furniture, as a stylist I love to spot the clever (and easy to copy) decorating tricks used to transform plain stands into evocative home environments.

Don’t be shy when it comes to size. One large accessory, such as this vintage globe, creates a sense of playfulness, adding an unexpected James Bond twist to a minimally modern kitchen.
In this serene bedroom, the huge, six-panel Chinese screen adds importance to the bed, while full-sized desks double as large bedside tables, creating a dramatic sleep zone.
Why have one when you can have 12… These glass pendant lights from Bocci look amazing hung in multiples, the resulting giant lighting feature adding drama to a city loft.

If you work at home, create an office that looks just as considered as the rest of your house. A large table does excellent desk duty, while giving you plenty of space to spread out.
Subverting the upholstery hierarchy, a large tufted ottoman paired with a smaller sofa and chaise transform this living room into a comfortable and relaxed environment.
These oversized pendant shades yell ‘smart dining zone’. When dinner isn’t being served, plants in large glass pots rise up the meet the lights for a striking display.
A floor-to-ceiling midcentury modern bookcase creates interest in this room otherwise devoid of architectural character. Carefully chosen coloured glasswear balances out the spindlier sections for an impressive, large-scale display.
