Ask a Designer: How Can I Make my Child’s Room Cosy for Autumn?
Now the cooler months are upon us, turn your child’s room into a fun, cosy den where they’ll be happy to spend their days
As the evenings draw in and the air turns a little chillier, we all start to hibernate a bit. But while we might be happy with a cuppa and a box set, children still want to play and need to be stimulated. Follow these design ideas and turn their bedroom into a cosy, comforting space where they’ll be happy to play until spring rolls round again.
Prep it for play
Shorter days mean children spend more time indoors, so make their abode rich with play equipment. This room takes other activities into consideration besides merely sleeping, with a whole world of craft and creativity ready to keep them engaged. Make sure you measure your space before buying tables and chairs, as you don’t want to compromise on floor area.

Use the power of colour
Colour instantly defines a room and can make it feel warm or cool, depending on the shades you choose and how you use them. Warm colours will go that extra mile to make a space feel snug and comfortable. Don’t feel you have to go for rich, bright colours, such as reds and oranges, though – consider shades on the lighter end of the spectrum, such as these pinks and purples, for a more soothing scheme.

Paint a magical mural
Murals transform a room instantly, creating a land far, far away. With your child spending more time indoors, a room that encourages imaginative play will be well received. Here, the artist has cleverly used existing features to create a seamless work of art. Murals are usually painted straight onto the wall, but can also be created using stickers or paper.

Top with a canopy
Canopies are a surefire way to introduce cosiness to a child’s bedroom. With the right fabric, you can achieve the perfect balance between ambience and cosiness. Coordinating linens add extra pizazz to the bedroom. Choose sheer or light fabrics that allow some light in and avoid a feeling of claustrophobia. Remember to keep ties out of the reach of young children.

Let their light shine
Select different levels of lighting in a kids’ room so the space can move easily from day to evening. Here, recessed spots ensures plenty of light for daytime playing, while bedside lamps are perfect for wind-down time with a book, and make it easy to turn out the light just before they nod off.

Splash on a beautiful bedspread
Statement bedspreads and quilts not only dress up a bed, they bring comfort and warmth to the room. Children tend to grow attached to their bedcovers, so involve them where possible in choosing one. The colours in this bedspread are rich, yet they coordinate with the pastel scheme.

Warm with a cosy rug
Choose a rug that doesn’t simply cover the floor, but one that adds colour, character and interest to your kid’s room. Besides being warm underfoot, rugs absorb sound and help to create a cocoon ambience. Some rugs even glow in the dark, making bedtime an event rather than a chore.

Turn your child’s bed into a cosy den with curtains they can draw themselves. If you don’t have bunks, create a similar effect by hanging a curtain around the head of the bed from the ceiling or a wall fitting. It will not only help keep in the warmth, it will give the bed a cocoon-like feel perfect for snuggling into.
