Fun Houzz: Re-create Cameron Diaz’s LA Mansion From ‘The Holiday’
For all those who love the 2006 film ‘The Holiday’, here’s how to get the smart LA pad look
With the countdown to Christmas upon us, there’s nothing quite a like a few holiday classics to get us in the festive spirit. The Holiday premiered in 2006, and sees two women – one English, one American – exchange properties for the Christmas season. Amanda Woods (Cameron Diaz) owns a successful company that produces movie trailers and lives in a luxurious home in Los Angeles. The home can be found in Pasadena in reality, and was designed by American architect Wallace Neff in 1928. It has Mediterranean influences combined with the luxurious finishes you’d expect to find in a successful business woman’s LA pad. Check out the look and see whether you’re tempted to incorporate any style ideas into your home.
Throw dinner parties
What’s the point in having a fabulous home if you can’t show it off in style? If you don’t have tons of space, try a stylish centrepiece on your dining table to create a special occasion mood.

Search for seagrass
There’s a large seagrass rug in Amanda’s hall and a seagrass runner on the stairs. These natural rugs are a staple in interior design, and are very forgiving when it comes to heavy use. They add texture and depth to a room too.

Bring greenery indoors
If you pay attention during the film, it quickly becomes apparent just how many indoor plants are used. They line the hallway and staircase, and combine with the seagrass matting to create a calming atmosphere.

Build a home cinema
This is slightly less feasible for most, but a home cinema is a must for a movie trailer producer. Why not invest in a projector, though, and screen films on a large white sheet hung in your living room or the garden?

Opt for metal framed windows
These lightweight steel-framed windows are evident throughout the house. They create a contemporary feel with an old-world twist, so fit well in the Californian/Mediterranean style home.

Make sure your bed is big and beautiful
The neutral theme is continued in Amanda’s bedroom, which is decorated in white and grey, and full of plush fabrics. One of the defining features of the room is the size of the bed. The saying less is more doesn’t quite work here, and we’d expect nothing less from a high-powered executive. If you want to make it extra-luxurious, opt for remote-controlled blinds so you don’t actually have to leave your capacious bed.

The only way is freestanding
An egg-shaped tub is the central design feature in the LA bathroom. It sets a restful tone for the room and is the epitome of luxury. Where better to wash away the worries of the day than in a magnificent bath?

Ensure your study is on the large side
If you’re planning on running your successful film company from home, you’ll need an office that’s fit for business. Make sure it’s spacious enough to house all of your papers without ever getting cluttered.

Go for terracotta roof tiles
Earthy tones and open balconies characterise the Mediterranean-style home. A great way to achieve this look is through terracotta roof tiles, but, granted, it’s probably better saved for warmer climates.

Squeeze in a home gym
This is a little like the home cinema – either you have the space or you don’t. If you do find yourself with an extra room in your house, create your very own fitness centre and stay in shape year-round.

Put in a pool
Ok, so now we are in the realms of fantasy, but a Californian dream home wouldn’t quite be complete without a pool to cool off in…

Amanda’s home looks as if it’s just been styled for a photoshoot. It’s impeccably decorated and incredibly sleek. With grey walls, dark stone flooring and plush white furniture, the property’s neutral palette is key when it comes to re-creating the vibe.
