•••By Any Design Ltd. 6 years ago It's great to mix and match tile but understand your tile setter will need to know this prior to quoting the job. Often these border detail and extras slow a job down a lot and add plenty of time and materials to a regular build. Any tile with a mesh backing should be soaked tested prior to use in a wet area. In today's showroom I would bet more than 50% of the tile sold is not suitable for a wet environment. The sheet backed products. Soak Test those tiles. (More info of Soak Testing Tile: http://no-curb.blogspot.ca/2014/02/soak-testing-tiles-photos-of-process.html) One area that was not covered in the story above was things like shower niches. Often a tile is too small to cover the niche bottom in one full tile. If this is the case a similar tile for the niche bottom can remove a grout joint or two and allow for a better draining and functioning shower niche. If your using say a small subway tile for the walls consider picking up a couple 12"x12" or 12"x24" white tile for the niche. Always remember that each tile may have it's own requirement for setting materials. Perhaps a separate requirement for grout. Know all of this prior to selecting t...

4 or 5 after bathroom: drain, floor tile cut.
The interior of the shower includes a built-in bench topped with Taj Mahal quartzite that coordinates with the vanity countertop, top of the pony wall and low-curb shower threshold. The control for the shower is located on the right, just inside the shower on the pony wall. “We wanted to make sure they had easy access to turn the shower valve on,” Foster Hurd says. She also made sure the handheld shower could reach across to the bench. Niches near the bench store products and keep them hidden from view. A long niche on the bench provides a spot for resting a foot while shaving legs. The shower floor is 1-by-1-inch honed mosaic tile in brown, cream and ivory. “The smaller grout lines provide good grip,” Foster Hurd says. “Another important element was that the shower floor does a great job of tying together all the colors you see in this bathroom.”
Large-format (24-by-48-inch) porcelain tile in a graphic print that features blues, black and gold. “The tile was flipped so it created a gradient effect, making it look like it was one giant slab of tile,” Brown says. “The feature wall is balanced with a white Calacatta marble-look porcelain tile on the side walls and on the shower floor, so the back wall really pops when you come into the room.” Imagine Stone Decor Domino, 24 by 48 inches,
Using same porcelain tile tho in different sizes throughout the shower, remainder of bathroom. Provides continuity.
A storage tower to the right of the shower has pullouts similar to those in a kitchen pantry. “You can stand there and see all your stuff at once,” Herbert says. “It gives you full access — you can see and touch everything.” Placement: Hip wall between stool (wide not deep), horizontally placed or lower left of single sink; or vertically right of sink/bedroom wall. Easier to access in wheelchair?
Great tips throughout article.
Textured 12-by-24-inch 3D porcelain tile covers the wide wall of the shower. Similar tile in a flat matte finish covers the two side walls. “We wanted to tile that whole end of the room but break it up by not using the same tile everywhere,” Bickl says. “The 3D tiles provided a different texture, without a huge contrast.” Shower wall tile: More series in Tortora with a matte finish, 12-by-24 inches, Piemmegres

Notice how tile shaped/cut for single drain. A gradient of 1.5 to 2 degrees is recommended for floor slope, and square or linear drains can be used. A waterproof membrane is typically installed on the walls before they’re tiled. The floor needs a waterproof substrate beneath the tile. In this sleek wet room (not this picture but previous picture) created in a Melbourne, Australia, renovation by GIA Bathrooms & Kitchens, the drain is below the shower head and the floor is appropriately sloped. “There has been a gradient created below the freestanding bath so water that gets behind the bath will fall into the shower waste,” Olivia Cirocco of GIA says, referring to the shower trap that collects water below the floor. The 12-by-24-inch white wall tile is a bright contrast to the 24-inch-square gray terrazzo floor tile that also stretches up as a backsplash.

Curbless shower and continuous flooring. “The most significant design detail would have to be the floor tile,” Singca says. “There are many gorgeous details throughout the bathroom, but the floor is what you see first and what makes it so unique.” Other special features include a vanity in a warm greige color (Shiitake by Sherwin-Williams), a curbless shower, a vessel sink (Morro by Native Trails) and a faucet mounted into the mirror and wall to save countertop space. Designer tip. “What made this room a success was the blending of the warm cabinets with the bright black-and-white floor tile,”

Is there enough 12 x 24 white tile for 1 wall and then select coordinating/contrasting same format tile for other walls?
Horizontally cut my 12 x24 tile for a stripe, adding dimension. ??Start with window to determine the band width that wraps 2 shower walls, entire back wall/outside wall, and around stool, rotated 90°. Remove the current ceiling-to-floor storage. Remove old closet. Determine depth of new closet spanning the full length of outside wall on north side of house. Walk-in? Sliding mirrored doors?
Horizontally cut my 12 x 24 in half. The shower walls feature gray ceramic 5-by-5-inch tiles with a smooth gloss finish and variation in hue and tone. The same tiles in white, cut in half, form the band between the gray tiles. “The client loved that tile because it’s really pretty and has a dimension to it,” Lerner says. “We used the band of white tile because we wanted to make it a bit different from what you typically see.” White matte penny round mosaic tiles on the shower floor offer good grip and a contrasting pattern to the wall tiles. Wanted to capture the co-efficient comment for shower flooring below: We did most everything Chic by Design recommended in an earlier comment when we built our retirement home in 2017. We decided on a walk in shower with no glass door. I couldn’t see myself dealing with glass or a shower curtain. The tiles we chose were small porcelain with a coefficient of friction rated for shower floors, sloped to the drain. We installed plenty of grab bars including one by the entry which has a bathmat placed just outside. The floors are heated making it even better! The shower bench my husband built is portable and came in handy when I had an ankle fusion last year and needed it right by the door and shower controls. With the lack of a barrier I was able to use my knew scooter and drive into the shower, set the brakes and transfer to the bench.
To avoid upkeep of glass install a curved rod for shower curtain. Heavy-duty types of shower glass to reduce maintenance available, more expensive.
In current primary bath •Rotate toilet to face vanity, • Pony wall (tiled) with or without glass partition for wheelchair accessible shower. Add bench--flip up, attached, purchase movable teak; •Minimize grout lines for cleaning ease. •Counter height 34" wheelchair accessible
Consideration: amount of grouting to keep clean with wall and floor tiles!! Shallower-than normal vanity depth, single sink. Wall mounted faucet accommodates vanity depth. Question: how to access for repairs? Shared wall with bedroom and place access in the bedroom? African Mahoganey facing for cabinets? 1 of 4 pictures.
On the shower floor, Wilson played off the wall tile’s geometry. The floor tile has a mini chevron-esque shape. And Wilson knew that small details like a shower drain can make a big difference. She found a stylish drain with a rectilinear swirl design.
Wendy Wilson and Associates (Pasadena, CA mid-century modern designed) Elegant aqua Z-shaped glass tile was the jumping-off point for the room’s style and color palette. The contemporary shape and soft tones add a sense of calm to the space. And the tiles reflect the light.
Low-iron Starphire glass for the shower. “It has beautiful aqua edges, rather than the green you get with other glass,” she says. She mounted a towel bar into the glass on the right and a robe hook into it on the left. There’s an additional towel bar on the wall.
Calm...the floor-to-ceiling tile on the wall that extends seamlessly from the shower stall to the area behind the tub. It is a custom pattern composed of picket tiles by Fireclay. The composition resembles abstract petals or leaves moving with the wind. “I laid the tile out in a pattern that gives off a subtle ombre effect without being too distracting,” Wundrow says.

Master bath. a Zen feeling in their bathroom, and bench seating inside and outside a new large shower. Shower features. Rain shower head. Wavy, large-format 3D wall tiles nod to the waterfront location of the home. Similarly, pebble tile on the shower floor recalls beach stones. Other special bathroom features. Beachy colors and warm walnut wood shelves. “Uh-oh” moment. “The homeowners took on a whole-house remodel and reached a point of decision overload,” says remodeler Gerard Ciccarello, who used Houzz ideabooks to refine the style for this project. “Working with a design-build professional helped with making decisions that resulted in a more cohesive look for the space.”

This idea. Not a fan of stark white? You can still get a very big and breezy effect with a tone-on-tone palette in warm beige, soft grays or even faint hues such as powder blue. Choose a sumptuous tile, and find a paint color for the remaining walls that picks up on one of the hues within it. The overall effect is still serene and spa-like, without the jarring visual breaks to shrink your perception of the space.
