Dream Spaces: Yoga and Meditation Zones to Help You Find Your Zen
Make like a yogi and let your thoughts momentarily drift away to these inspiring spaces
At the basest level, yoga and meditation require nothing more than your intention and your presence. But that’s letting the opportunity to design a beautiful space in your home pass you by – and a gorgeous setting can only aid in your quest for stillness and clarity, of course… Be inspired by these scenic spots to get you in the zone.
Make balancing a breeze
Set among the trees, this veranda has all the elements you’d need for a tranquil meditation session. The white curtains allow in light and air and, because they’re translucent, you can still visually connect with the outside environment. The cool concrete is a reminder to stick to the essentials, while the floor cushion is a little treat for a comfortable session.

Set up space to reflect
This minimalist space is full of natural elements. The large mirror to the right encourages reflection and is ideal for perfecting your poses. Water is the most spiritual of the five elements (water, earth, fire, wood and metal), not only representing regeneration, but also what can be achieved with persistence – just think what a small stream can do to a landscape.

Be intent on stillness
Yoga isn’t only about headstands and sun salutations – above all, it’s about being present, and sometimes being present means listening to your body and taking a nap. How comfy does this window seat look? The view would definitely inspire me to write my thoughts down to get them in order.

It would be hard not to relax in this light-filled room. The sweeping arch shows that in design, flexibility and being experimental can lead to beautiful things. Now, if only we could apply that to our bodies and minds…

Carve out a hideaway
On those days when life becomes too much, little spaces like this are just what you need to get away from it all. The colours are uplifting but not too loud, and you even have a little window to pull in natural sunlight while keeping the world at bay.

Follow the rule of three
Three is the magic number, from the three primary colours to mind, body and soul. How perfect, then, is a triangle? This cute cabin’s wide base and narrow peak serve as a symbol to stay balanced and upright (apart from when you’re having a well-earned lie-down, of course…).

Soothe your soul
One of the first mantras I learnt is that the ground is always there to support you. So the floor mattress in this dark, cosy room looks like the perfect spot to meditate. Throw in a couple of incense sticks or scented candles and you’ll have made yourself a soothing sanctuary.

Hibernate somewhere tranquil
Freezing cold days would be more bearable if I had a little meditation hut like this! A space detached from the rest of the house is a nice place to recharge. The large window means you don’t completely miss out on the picturesque surroundings, and the glass at the top of the hut is a clever way to collect as much light as possible.

Abandon everything
For most of us, being at the beach means being on holiday, and holidays are meant for relaxation. If you’re doing your meditation right, sand in your hair and between your toes should leave you completely unruffled…

Imagine waking up to this view… The large windows let light pour in and give a sense of being out in the wilderness, while the floorboards create a connection with the earth and are a gentle prompt to stay grounded. As a bonus, the pitched ceiling allows for good air circulation – ideal for cooling you down as you get deeper into your practice.
