9 Times the Classic Egg Chair Has Made a Striking Statement
See how this iconic curvy chair exudes a distinct look in a range of different spaces around the world
One of the most recognisable pieces by Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen, the Egg chair was originally designed in 1958 as part of a commission for the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel (formerly SAS Royal Hotel) in Copenhagen, the first skyscraper in Denmark. The chair is a testament to Jacobsen’s design triumphs – its curves provided a striking contrast to the building’s sharp, linear surfaces. He was also the first to use and perfect a sculpting technique wherein the chair was moulded out of a strong foam inner shell under the upholstery. Since then, the design has remained the same, with a satin polished steel pedestal and aluminium star-shaped base, and upholstery in many gorgeous colours.
The Egg’s unique fluid shape creates a cocooning effect that exudes both comfort and sophistication. It fits seamlessly within any interior style, which is why it continues to be a popular piece in today’s homes. Check out how this modern masterpiece takes the stage in different interiors.
