Pop in some colour
If you want to add some colour to your living room that’s not as permanent as paint or wallpaper, a statement rug is the perfect option for you. This graphic yellow and grey design adds a subtle wash of colour to the soft grey living room, and can easily be updated for a new look if required.

Trick the eye
You don’t actually need a fabric rug to get the look of this trend – you could think laterally and introduce floor tiles instead. From afar, this looks like an intricately patterned rug, but in fact it’s made up of hard-wearing tiles.
This is a practical option in a high-traffic area – and perfect for underneath a dining table, as here – as it’s easy to mop clean and will have no curling edges over which to trip. A tile ‘rug’ is also a great way to zone an open-plan space.

Tone shades of grey
Fans of monochrome style can still tap into this trend, as this grey living room demonstrates. The designer has used the full spectrum of greys here, from the light tone on the walls to the rich dark curtains, and the rug provides a nice midpoint, adding a layer of texture and interest.

Lighten up for little ones
A rug is a great way to a soften a wooden floor in a child’s playroom or bedroom. A brightly coloured design is great for little ones to play on and a lightweight flatweave, like this one, is a practical option for a space that needs to be kept clean.

Play peekaboo
Inky dark walls are also very popular at the moment, and this room combines both trends beautifully. The monochrome rug under the sofa gives a nod to the dark walls, while also bringing in a layer of texture and pattern.
The size of this rug is well-thought-out, too. It’s large enough to cover the area in front of the sofa, but not so large that it completely obscures the beautiful herringbone parquet underneath.

Tuck under the bed
A large rug is a great way to ‘anchor’ a bed and if you run it right underneath, it will create a soft, warm layer underfoot on chilly mornings.
Choosing a pale colour with a simple, graphic print, as the designer has done in this contemporary space, will create a calming feel.

Create a blank canvas
A soft, pale rug, like this diamond-patterned, Beni Ourain-style one, is a good way to lift a room and to bring texture and warmth to a colourful scheme.
The dark floor and blue furniture in this living room make a strong statement, so a dark rug may have been too overwhelming, but this soft off-white one helps to quietly knit the scheme together and add interest without competing too loudly.

Weave in a little luxury
Rugs are a great way to add a touch of luxury to a room. The intricately patterned rug in this reading nook brings interest and elegance to the scheme, but the soft colour palette doesn’t shout too loudly, so the overall feel of the room is calming and restful.
