Master Bedroom
Layer tone on tone This master bedroom leads to a calm and elegant bathroom. To create a serene look, it would have been important that the two flooring materials didn’t jar. The designers have chosen a grey carpet in the bedroom and marble tiles in the bathroom that pick out the grey tone of the carpet to create an easy transition between the two rooms. The grey bath also helps to pull the two floorings together.
Embrace low ceilings Chandeliers and high ceilings can be natural bedfellows, but a low ceiling simply means you need to choose a light design that’s in proportion. Here, for example, the glass part of this design is broader than it is deep, and the hanging chains could further be shortened if required.
Consider bedside lighting In most bedrooms, space is at a premium. Bedside tables don’t necessarily have room for large lamps, books, flowers and other bits and pieces. To free up space, go for wall or pendant lights next to your bed. If you aren’t in the process of a major renovation, pendants might be easier to install. With more space on your bedside surface, you might have room for a few indulgent bits and pieces, such as fresh flowers.
Focus on period features If your bedroom is bereft of original features, wall panelling (or mouldings) can easily be added to impart subtle depth and a sense of ‘history’. In contrast, if you fear too many competing period features are spoiling the lines of your scheme, try painting the woodwork and walls in the same colour. As shown here, this tonal trick makes panelling and multiple doorways recede into the background, while creating a clean, colour-blocked effect.
Build it around a door Walls with doors on them tend to be dismissed when considering potential storage areas, but if you build the wardrobes up and over the door cavity, you can get lots of capacity. Also, if you choose the right fittings, it won’t be visually intrusive, which will heighten the sense of space. Which wardrobe doors to fit? Choose flush, push-click doors in a colour that tones with the other three walls in your room to blend them away.
