Play with patternA dramatic design gives the glass divider between this kitchen and dining area presence. The upscaled motif means that the clutter created by meal preparation can be hidden, but the kitchen area borrows light from the remainder of the room even when it’s screened off. Here, the panel partition is sliding – a winner for neat nooks, where hinged doors would intrude into either area they divide. Tuck it into a borderCan you spot the rubbish bins on this drive? They’re neatly tucked away in the wooden box to the left of this image and the impact of the structure has been much reduced by positioning it in a decorative floral border and planting low standard trees right alongside it. The structure also has a green roof planted up with succulents to further disguise the box and make it as visually appealing as possible. View more images of this front gardengarden layout

The adult seating space is the perfect spot for guests to relax in before and after a dinner party. To the left is a stylish formal dining area. For this space, Gordon chose a neutral scheme to give it a more sophisticated feel. A luxurious rug sits beneath monochrome furniture. At the far end is a wood- burning stove, which makes the whole area feel cosy. The homeowners and designer originally chose a triangular model, but this square version had less protruding angles. Gordon’s team positioned the stove where the flue would go straight up through the flat roof and angled away from the bedroom window above.Sofa and coffee table, Houseology. RISE Design Studio designed the brass pendant, which was fabricated and polished by a specialist metalworker. It makes a cool metallic contrast to the chunky, distressed oak dining table. Art arrangement
Lesson 5: How to cleverly squeeze in an islandIf you think you can’t fit an island into your kitchen, think again – it pays to consider all the options. The previous island in this scheme was large and took over the whole space, so the designers came up with a clever solution – a triangular island that replicates the shape of the room and fits in much more neatly. The owners still have an extra work surface, but it doesn’t overwhelm the rest of the space.Visit the rest of this small, new-build apartment with a clever redesign kitchen island
