Opposites attract, it’s true, but that doesn’t always make life easy. If one of you is a neat freak and the other, well, less so, resentment can soon start to simmer. Before you know it, that wet towel on the bed, discarded socks next to the laundry basket, or ever-present clutter by the front door can tip you over the edge, leading to an overreaction that leaves your partner wondering why such a little thing should matter so much.
Fortunately, there are ways to stop your housekeeping peeves from reaching boiling point – but it may be a matter of meeting your other half somewhere in the middle.

“It’s not surprising that housework is one of the top four or five things people argue about,” says Relationships Australia practice leader David Roberts. With two partners often both working and busy – and some juggling parenting responsibilities on top – Roberts says talking through housework expectations is vital for a harmonious household.
“Couples with different backgrounds can often have very different expectations, and so the ability to communicate well and without judgement in the discussion is really important,” he says. “Poor communication, along with finances and infidelity, are among the top reasons for divorce, so open discussion and exploration are vital.”

At one job I had, the director's secretary had a sign on her desk: "Don't help by cleaning my desk, I know exactly where everything is." Ask her about the RFP for ____ and she instantly picked the right stack from the mess of overlapping papers and folders. My Hubby is that way. I'm not.
Our compromise is by location. He has a 2'x2' chair-side table with closed inside storage. I can barely move it. There is a 4" bare spot, when his water glass isn't there. I ignore it. Anything he leaves in my clean zones gets moved and he asks where I put it without complaining.
Funny story: I was the head nurse in a busy understaffed ICU when my children were in the middle grades (1980s). The first summer our son and daughter were in charge of house cleaning their solution was large paper bags. Once a week they would clear their Dad's scattered clutter and trash, bagging it and placing it on his pillow. They got a laugh out of it and I got a clean house, at least the public areas. Dad just put the bag on the floor to deal with when the collection made it hard to get in and out of bed.
Great advice. Especially liked picking up your partners stuff. Consider it a gift to them instead of a chore for you do it because you love them
For years my husband piled clean clothes on a hamper next to our long Thomasville bedroom dresser. By the end of the week, the pile would include clean & dirty clothes, which drove me nuts! The hamper would be empty. I redecorated our bedroom 3 years ago in anticipation of retiring and have less discretionary cash. I got rid of the long dresser and in its place, purchased two large Pottery Barn armoires. They actually took up the same floor space as the dresser, but added about 4 feet of space vertically. This simple change has eliminated the problem. We are both completely happy with our matching armoires with plenty of storage. Now that we’re both retired, we share most of the housekeeping chores. We’ve both decided that good storage and less stuff is the solution to keeping our home comfortably clean with minimal effort!
