I understand the evolution of putting laundry rooms in the most active part of the home and near a back door was probably because of agricultural and kid dirt and because women spent most of their time in the kitchen. However, I don’t live that way. I’ve always thought that I shouldn’t have to cart the majority of my mildly dirty clothes from my bedroom closet hamper thru my home to the kitchen/utility room to pile them up on the floor/baskets, clean them and then trek back across the house to store them in the bedroom. What a waste of energy and time! The best laundry area I ever had was on the second floor in the hall outside the bedrooms. It was a well designed laundry closet with overhead storage cabinets, on an outside wall for venting, and was conveniently organized. My laundry experience was blissful! ...even when we had really dirty kid clothes to manage. We should really rethink some traditional aspects of home design and how we live now to truly maximize efficiency.

I agree regarding entrance/mudroom in same place as laundry. The muddy paws/dog hair, dirt makes taking clean clothes out of washer/dryer a b8g risk- if you drop an item on the dirty floor... Might be ok for large dog towels, trow rugs, horse blankets. People laundry should be closer to bedrooms. I have had dog/horse/rug washer in garage and second washer in a closet in master bedroom. (One bedroom main house). If you have a detached guestroom or guesthouse, even if very small put a compact washer/dryer there also.

Our renovation is nearly finished and we managed to get our utility relocated upstairs. Looking forward to having the washer dryer near the areas where clothes, clean and dirty are stored.. The only time we will be carrying laundry down the stairs is when we are going on holiday!
