Great article Kieran, but while depicted in two of the images you have chosen (the third and ninth images), you have not mentioned the option of steel window frames. We have found these to be tremendously popular in recent years and they have certainly received a great deal of publication, seen in all sorts of magazine features.

The great thing about them is that due to the great strength of steel, the sections can be much slimmer than with almost any other material and so they can look wonderfully delicate. They do tend to be the most expensive of the mainstream options and while good thermally, may not be quite as good as some other options, but in my view they are unrivaled aesthetically.

Agree with you about steel. I had the windows on my late 20s house restored a few years ago and am so pleased I didn't replace with either aluminium or pvc. This is a photo of work in progress.

As regards sash windows, there are many good companies who will remove and overhaul original sashes, installing draught proofing and mending the timber, rather than replacing. A good option for listed houses.
