Well I'm English and I hate to burst everyone's bubble, but I've seen very few kitchens in the UK that look like these! Beautiful as they are, they are not the norm. Most working/ middle class kitchens are very ordinary, with European-style fitted cabinetry made from melamine or MDF, a washing machine (not many households have dryers, they still hang their clothes out to dry), and a small table with chairs if there's room. The only kitchens I have seen similar to these romanticized samples are in posh country homes and they have been overly designed that way, or, at the other end of the spectrum, the battered and well-used kitchens in old farmhouses where many a wild rabbit has been skinned at the kitchen sink.

About the island... Yay or nay. Nay the way most people seem to use them. I don't like being invited to sit at an island. I have LEGS! There is never enough overhang like a table has. These islands are made for children or very short adults! There is no comfort for most people who have to do the sitting. It is painful. Then, some islands are so small they are only a landing spot, not a work space. And they are frequently cluttered with handbags, work papers, junk... Ewwww, and now the person is going to use it to prepare food without wiping it down well! That all being said, we LOVE our island. We use it as a genuine workspace, not as a catchall, not to eat at. It's custom built and five feet long. I keep the KA mixer on it. That's it. Easy to clean. A regular table is not as tall as a countertop, and it is backbreaking to use a table instead of an island. A countertop height table is better, but a lot of peoples' feet dangle and it can be just as uncomfortable as sitting at an island.

Interesting reading all this 6 years down the line when kitchen islands still seem to be the must-have in every new kitchen :) I fully agree with a central worktop height prep table rather than an island to sit at though. From the point of view of a young mum, a family table and chairs is best for meals, an island just for prep (don't like massive islands stuffed full of storage, it's too show homey), and no open storage (at least not low down, it's just asking for trouble).
Love the open shelving look but not interested in cleaning it ;-)
Fully agree that so many 'country' kitchens these days are just too posh and not a room where you'd want someone to tramp in with muddy boots!
Really miss the belfast sink we left behind at our old house - so nice to have enough room to wash greasy oven trays without covering yourself and the worktop and the floor.
