Ann Howell, I have loads of flowers growing in my gravel path - all self-sown with the help of birds - including borage (lovely blue flowers) and Californian poppies (vibrant orange), while lilies of the valley grow between old paving stones. I know I 'should' dig them out, but quite like the natural messiness!

When house buying how many times do we see a garden with just grass and one or two shrubs and a basic fence? I can’t help but think a part paved part gravel with shrubs and perennials together with some light canopy small trees and at least partly hedged must be a better environmental way. Lawns are hard work too and actually if you have a small garden you might not want to have to store a mower?

Agree in principle, Emily, but in the end it is easier to remove (or compost) an unwanted scrap of lawn or shrub than to get rid of unwanted hardscape - particularly as in our case it had to be carted through the Victorian terraced house!
