Practicality does need to balance the aesthetic when panelling is used, particularly in an area such as a Kitchen, often being the most used room in the house. That said though, the most used can equal the most cleaned, and so it's good to consider textures and depth into parts of this space, as it might not turn out as feared.
I like what Haus and Mustard Architects have created.
Positioning and proximity is key here. If a Client expressed interest in this I would employ in a larger space or Kitchen/Diner/Lounge where it can support character and warmth.
I've done this in my little kitchenette! I used a satin paint so the pattern of the wood shows through.
Fab ideas here. We agree, panelling is a feature that can add interest to walls, as well as help to hide functionality. Win win!
