Our bedroom is square, but with the chimney breast cutting across one corner. We've put the bed against that section of wall, so it juts into the room at an angle. We love it like that, not least as we can sit in bed and enjoy the view from the window, but working out where to put wardrobes etc is proving more of a challenge.
We have a wide, low chest of drawers at the foot of the bed, akin to an ottoman, and have some temporary hanging space while we work out what to do. Not keen on fitted wardrobes as don't want damp which can be a problem with an older house. Ours was built in 1906, so Edwardian.
Added problem is two windows in the room, on two walls. Great for light, but not so good for space for wardrobes!
We need to be able to get round the ends of the bed without damaging shins which further limits wardrobe options. But we've lived with it for almost eighteen months so sure we can manage until we work out a solution. Maybe ditching some clothes would be the best idea...

Hi Angie, sounds tricky. You could try fitted window seats beneath the windows as they offer some useful storage - albeit not hanging space of course. Also depends on whether or not you have the space available beneath your windows or whether they might prove to be another obstacle. It does sound like space is perhaps tight so you might want to reconsider your avoidance of fitted units as this is undoubtedly the most efficient way of providing storage. If it's located on non external facing walls then that could prevent the damp problem you were worried about. It may be that an around the bed fitted storage solution as shown in this article but of course fitting around the chimney breast could work. It's the sort of bespoke work we specialise in doing. I've attached a photo of one we did recently. Hope this helps and good luck. Jamie
