Weird but I read the above thinking one of the pros had waded in with (good) advice! Then realised it was you, Gerry! Is there no escape?!!
Anita, I feel cream 'goes' with most colours so you could paint your bedroom deep purple for eg, and it would still be ok. Speaking personally, I work from the colours/patterns in the duvet cover as my starting point. Or you could start with the curtains. You can then either compliment the colours or indeed contrast them. Here's my (almost) finished bedroom to give you an idea. Am currently awaiting the curtains which will be a browny gold/golden brown sort of shade.
So if pastels are your pull, Anita, best get the bedding first imo. It's easy to get the right shade of grey or pink in paint but a bugger if it turns out the wrong shade for the bedding and its already on the walls! But I'm no pro remember...

Who's following who? :D Love your 'muriel' Cassandra, is it a decal? Also the amazing bedside cabinet. The curtains should finish it all perfectly, post a picture when they arrive :)

The tree silhouettes are indeed decals. Have a few more 'trees' on the other walls. They come in different colours too. I chose the dark brown ones. Tbh they'd look best in isolation on a single wall as in attached pic... worthy of a HOUZZ living room, wot!! The bedside cabinets... two - one on other side of bed... came from a local market trader who sells recycled teak and unusual wood items from his stall.
