I think the discussion of cost vs value and so on raised by this renovation is an interesting one. We can afford to extend our home and holiday home too but won’t do it because it would reduce the communication and badly effect the relationships within the house(s) and create either more work for ourselves or more household management of outsourced services. We are also a couple with a primary school aged child and we value our time together. With only the one story - ground level - we sing out to each other from room to room. Our dog likes being close to his whole pack too. We are also in an expensive location in a capital city and have spent a lot of money renovating our single story house. I couldn’t imagine looking after a small child playing in a basement while I’m cooking dinner upstairs. Toddlers want to be close by their parents and vice versa. The house shown here would require a nanny and cleaning services at a bare minimum. I wouldn’t put children away downstairs, wine - yes - but not kids unless they’re teenagers entertaining their friends.
