Houzz Tour: A Small City Flat is Given a Space-enhancing Makeover
Boosting light and bringing in plenty of warm, natural textures has taken this flat from cramped to cool and calm
“The owner lived in San Francisco for almost 10 years before moving back to India. As an ode to her experiences there, she was keen on channelling California casual vibes in her apartment, and it was my task to bring that vision to life,” says Sunita Yogesh, founder and principal designer of Sunita Yogesh Studio.
“Hence, we chose an aesthetic seeded in clean lines and subtle neutrals to give the home a calm and composed air,” she says. “We managed to pack plenty of functional elements into the compact space, while still making it aesthetically pleasing.”

The main door opens into a wide hallway characterised by monochrome accents. “We wanted to make the entry impactful, yet minimal,” Sunita says. “We went for a kilim-patterned upholstered bench with hairpin legs, and black-and-white abstract artwork.
“The hallway sets the mood of the home by inspiring an airy, relaxed and unfussy vibe,” she says.

The hallway leads directly into the dining room, which is decorated in a muted palette with natural wood furniture and monochrome accessories.
“We defined the dining zone with a grid gallery wall featuring prints of San Francisco on one side, and a wooden console table showcasing a chic, coastal-themed vignette on the other. The dining chairs, embellished with woven details, add texture to the muted shell,” Sunita says.

Adjacent to the dining room lies the living room, which introduces bursts of indigo into the neutral palette. A rug anchors the furniture into a cohesive composition, giving the living zone sharp definition, while demarcating it from the dining area.
The space features soft layers of light by way of the floor lamp, table lamp and brass sputnik light fixtures.

“We opted for neutral colours for the sofa, pouffes and coffee table, and infused vibrancy and texture through artwork, textiles and other décor elements,” Sunita says. “We also juxtaposed an assortment of wood tones to add visual variety to the aesthetic.”
The original kitchen was fitted out with builder-grade materials, and featured a brown splashback and plain worktop.
“The owner’s dream was to have an all-white kitchen. So we tore down the shell and started from scratch. We opted for a herringbone splashback, quartz worktop and Shaker-style cabinets in an all-white palette,” Sunita says.
“In addition, we incorporated open wooden shelves to give the space a swish spin. The kitchen also has a bijou utility zone at the far end, for laundry and storage.”

The master bedroom has an upholstered king-size bed with a buttoned headboard in charcoal grey. Wooden bedside tables flank either side, highlighting the slumber zone.
“We chose board-and-batten panelling for the wall to conjure a sense of form and texture, and crafted a minimalist vignette on the chest of drawers for a sophisticated appeal,” Sunita says.
The master bathroom takes a cue from the living room, incorporating a palette of indigo and white. The white walls and ceiling urge the eyes to the striking patterned floor. The space straddles an aesthetic between modern minimalism and eclectic indulgence.
The guest bedroom continues the blue-and-white palette in the rest of the flat. A compact queen-size (small double) bed in a natural wood tone tames the starkness of the crisp white walls, while black bedside tables create a contrasting interplay with the surrounding neutral elements.
“We wanted to keep the space visually light, so we chose pieces that would be easy on the eye, such as the transparent globular table lamps, pastel paintings and soft fabrics,” Sunita says.

With simple grey floor tiles and vitrified marble walls, the main bathroom has a classic look.
“We combined white and wood tones to balance the colour temperature. Here, the wood-finish vanity unit really stands out against the white backdrop,” Sunita says.
