It’s very easy for house projects to grow. Midway through the addition of an extension and loft conversion to this terraced home in London, the owners asked designer Sacha Berger to help with bathroom design. The refurbishment grew from there. “Then they wanted kitchen ideas, then it became a much bigger project and I ended up updating all the rooms,” says Berger. The Victorian house needed to get closer to its original style, too. “It was decorated in a very minimalist, contemporary way when they bought it,” says Berger, “and they wanted to put in more character.”

Berger’s initial brief was to give the bathrooms an industrial twist. “I came up with the idea of giving them the same feel, but making them all slightly different,” she says. Berger introduced matt black brassware to each bathroom, and this matt black colour became a feature throughout the house, with the industrial look also used in every room – including the kitchen, seen here – to give the home flow.

The modern white kitchen had already been selected when Berger came on board. “To add interest, we chose parquet flooring that introduces pattern and texture,” says Berger. For a high-end industrial finish, a smart pendant light was suspended over the breakfast bar.

Getting the layout of the extended space right was complicated. “We spent quite a while playing around with different layouts,” says Berger, “but because we wanted a sofa and a TV, the best place for the dining table was between this and the kitchen. A rectangular design didn’t work, but an oval was better.”

To prevent the kitchen looking too monochrome, an aged copper splashback was used, and the colour ties in with the bar stools.

A vintage sideboard with a picture shelf above breaks up the long white wall in the kitchen-diner. “With young kids everything had to be practical while looking stylish,” says Berger.
Extending to the side helped to create more room to play with in the kitchen-diner.
The dramatic downstairs cloakroom is part of the kitchen extension. “It’s a big room and we wanted it to have a stylish look,” say Berger. Deep blue walls are teamed with black and gold fixtures.

Textured wallpaper was used on the ceiling of the living room to boost the room’s character. “We wanted to bring in some colour, but also to have an industrial luxe feel in here,” says Berger. She sourced pictures to complement the space and supplement the owners’ collection of art. The cabinetry was built by a joiner.

Patterned Victorian-style tiles on the hallway floor pick up the black theme and make the space more interesting. “Pendant lights rather than spots help bring character back, too,” says Berger. They were sourced from eBay. The electric sockets here and throughout the house are black.
In the twins’ bedroom, fun bunny stickers decorate the walls. These stickers and the line at dado height both repeat the black detailing used throughout the house. The chimney breast wall was used to create built-in bookshelves and the glazed cabinet is a vintage find.

Pink and mint are a pretty combination in Sophia’s bedroom. “We wanted it to be girly but not too babyish,” says Berger. “The upstairs flooring is pine, which I suggested limewashing so it didn’t have the pine colour and looks more Scandi.”

This bathroom was the first room Berger planned. Brick slips add texture to the wall behind the bath and there’s also a concrete-look screed on the window wall.

The study-cum-guest-room is at the back of the house where the roof is a different shape. “We painted one wall dark grey because it’s double height,” says Berger.

For the bathroom located by the guest room, Berger sourced shower doors with black edging to echo the linear detailing throughout the house. Dark grout was used for the tiles and black brassware was installed in this bathroom, too.

The master bedroom is luxurious. “It had to be somewhere to escape to and feel hotel-like, but with the same look as the rest of the house,” says Berger.
The sizeable space warranted a feature wall, and in dark grey it makes the room cosier.

The master bathroom is a few steps down from the main bedroom in the loft. “We wanted a more luxe marble look with a white concrete floor,” says Berger. “We made it into a wet room, so the floor carries into the shower.”
